HOV/car pool lane violation

Lately I've been paying more attention to cars in the HOV/car pool lane and noticed quite a few people drive in that lane by themselves. Mostly males but seen a few females as well. Seems like a foolish risk since it's usually too late to get out of the lane by the time you see the LEO. Especially here in CA where motorcycle cops often split the lane between the car pool and adjacent lane and can easily see inside your car.

HOV violation isn't a moving violation, its just a straight fine.

Lets say its dark and getting in the car pool lane saves you 20 mins every night. So you save 3h 40m a month by doing this. Whats the likelihood of getting caught when its dark? Whats your time worth to you?

Yeah, what's $480?

To answer the OP, there are certain freeways where you can buy your way into the HOV lanes. There is a pass you mount to your windshield and when you pass by the scanners it records you were using the HOV lane and bills you accordingly.

If you don't have the HOV pass you can be ticketed for using the carpool lanes if you are by yourself.

I carpool. I've seen the cops just chill on the onramps pulling people over who take advantage of the carpool lane to get on. Quite funny I say. 🙂

I've seen toll roads but have yet to see any pay to use HOV lanes here in the LA and SB county.

I do this on occasion. My window tint is dark enough that it's hard to see who's inside.

I got busted in March. (Non-moving violation variation). If you cross the double-yellows in order to get in, then it becomes a moving violation.

I wonder if anyone had try putting a blow up doll on the passenger seat.

Ruses motorists have used to conceal their driving alone in car-pool lanes:

Store mannequins, blow-up dolls, kickboxing dummies, cardboard cut-outs, and even balloons (with faces drawn on them in marking pen).

Buckling the passenger-side seat belt and pretending to talk to someone reclining in that seat.
Haha, guilty of that one.

Covering an empty infant seat with a blanket or placing a doll in it.

Taping a styrofoam wig stand to the passenger headrest and topping it with a blonde wig.

Strapping the family pooch into the passenger seat.

Honestly, Socal drivers are so retarded that half the time I do have a passenger and get in the carpool lane, it goes the same speed or slower than the others cause some dumbfuck brakes when cars in other lanes do, or just goes slower than he posted limit.

I haven't seen anyone go as far as they do in Indonesia though...

For less than a dollar, car owners hire one or two jockeys to gain access to stretches of the city’s “3 in 1,” high-occupancy lanes. The jockey is essentially an extra passenger who helps commuters circumvent carpooling rules, making the ride into central Jakarta slightly less slow.

We have one in San Diego on the 15. You can drive in it if you are carpooling or if you have the FasTrak pass. One of the women I work with has the pass and she gets billed monthly for each time she uses it.

It actually has eased congestion quite a bit. The 15 used to be the worst freeway in San Diego to commute on during rush hour but not anymore (I know, I commute on it daily). That distinction falls to the 5 freeway now.

Up here around Seattle most of the HOV lanes are only HOV from 5 am through 7 pm. If it's later than 7 pm (or earlier than 5 am) you can legally use the HOV lane even if you're single-occupancy. Despite the signs posted, most people don't seem to know this and if you do a lot of late-evening or early-morning driving you can basically get a completely empty lane to yourself even if there's moderate traffic in the "normal" lanes.

7-9am
4-6pm

here in S.Florida on i-95 for the HOV lanes, other wise you can use it.

Now they are installing express lanes in broward...sigh well lets see if it does anything

I have a pass to do this. It's basically a RFID tag attached to the windshield.

When traffic is light it's around .07 per mile. I've used it up to $1.50 per mile in stopped traffic with the hov lane still going 65mph+.
