So Houston had upwards of 16inches of rain last night/this morning.

South of Houston I woke up to only .03in but it's now been raining hard for over an hour and I'm up to almost 2 inches with it coming down at over 1.5in/hr.

Everyone else in the area doing ok?

I'm on the south east side of town, we're doing fine. Looks like the rain is letting up (at the moment). My street isn't close to flooding yet and I live in a semi-crappy neighborhood.... But at least we have a couple retention ponds for this type of thing.

Everyone sent in an email about not coming into work today, which is awesome

I made it in but it took about twice as long. There's some minor street flooding on the way to JSC but the roads were mostly passable.

Why anyone would go into the office on a day like today is beyond me...

I was woken up around 12:45 when everything really started blowing in. Hasn't stopped up here since.

I'm only 4 to 5 miles from the office. I made it less than half way before I turned around and went back home. I received a text telling me the office was closed before I left, but it's easier for me to make coffee at work than at home. I only have a french press at home so now I have to clean out that damn thing. First world problems.

Lol, it's also the final day for taxes. I guess that's an issue if you still submit paper forms.

That's what VPN is for.

<-- VPN'd on work machine

the vast majority of the workforce does not have this luxury

I do when I decide to bring my laptop home from work, and not everyone had a laptop, or have jobs they require them to physical do things

Here in Austin we've been getting a ton of rain but it looks like Houston took the brunt of it being closer to the Gulf. We had some flooding in the low areas but nothing like Houston.

I saw this thread and then was wondering about how much we were going to get, ya looks like that whole area is getting crapped on with rain.

East Texas is considered sub-tropical, or so I heard. Just wrapping up 10 hours of rain here in NE Texas, 5 hours north of Houston. Ahh. Hope that's it for the day, no real flooding.

Alright everybody in Houston, time to pull up stakes and invade New Orleans. See how they like it.

Seriously? Anyone in the white collar world should have this option.

I say that mostly because companies would be stupid not to do this. Plenty of people will work on their own time and work excessive hours if they have the ability to do so.

Sad, miserable existence.

I live and work on the SW side of town. We had to shut the plant down today due to associates calling in and all the flooding around our plant. Took me two hours to drive home and I only live 4 miles form the plant.

Too much concrete, too many roads, and not enough permeable surface? Or are these floods simply unavoidable for the region?

Combination of things. Most areas don't handle 12 inches of rain in a day without flooding, that causes plenty of problems even in areas with permeable surfaces to absorb water. And the Houston area doesn't drain all that well, lots and lots of concrete funneling water into smaller areas, highways that are not elevated like many other areas, maybe poor drainage system planning too.
