Is it possible to look up listed or recently sold housing comps without a realtor? Is there a good website for it? I'm trying to find something easier that I can use for SF and Bed/bath other than zillow, the local fiscal office, or local newspaper which reports sales.

All the data is out there, but I am not sure there is an easy way to get it without a realtor.

Are you buying or selling?

Neither, I'm not looking for me. Someone is trying to dispute taxes I believe. Asked me to look for them.

In what possible way is Zillow difficult?

Zillow is not difficult, but it is also not the most reliable. That is why I asked if there were any others, outside of Zillow.

EDIT: TO waffle, yes most of that info is available, however it is not easy to find/read/sort.

This probably depends on where you live. Some County Register's office make all their documents available for viewing online, others provide limited information (occasionally sales prices on deeds) which you can usually search by providing a date or range of dates. Barring that, you may be stuck going to the Register's office and searching manually on the computers and/or Deed books which you may or may not be able to figure out on your own or with the help of the people who work there.

The other alternative is just going straight to the tax records. In NJ the tax records available online provide you with assessed value and generally any sale info for about 10 years. You'd have to know the address or block/lot of the properties you wanted info on for it to be any help, however and in your case you'd need to know which properties were bought/sold recently.

redfin.com is pretty good, but it depends on the area you are looking, it works well for SF Bay area, no idea about other areas.

propertyshark.com has a lot of info, but it is more for looking up specific properties and/or owners.
