Hi all. I'm going to be attending UCLA as a freshmen in the fall 2002 quarter. Which housing option should I choose for my freshmen year and why? The residence halls or the new De Neve? Thanks and congrats to everyone else that made it in =).

definitely live in the residence halls (high-rises) your first year. i lived in sproul my freshman year (already three years ago!) and it was one of the best experiences of my life. the problem with sunset/de neve is that you don't meet as many people because the bathrooms aren't communal. live there your second year.

if you get a floor where half the people are athletes, get the hell out!
one year i was on a floor with TWO different athletic programs. the guys barfed and shat all over the bathroom like EVERY SINGLE DAY, f*cking changed underwear with the DOOR OPEN, and played SHOWER TAG.

yeah.

De Neve is sweet! That would be my pick. As for meeting people, well, just sell drugs.
Doh! j/k

i'd go for de neve...it's not as bad as sunset...and the high-rise bathrooms can get to be a bit of a problem if you dorm with a bunch of dirty people who shat everywhere, like to cut their hair in the sink...barf...etc

de-neve is actually pretty cool, but the rooms are kinda small although they are doubles :) congrats and maybe i will see ya around next year!

Do you really meet less people by living in De Neve? If so, I think your plan sounds good sheselectric. Anyone currently living in De Neve or the Residence Halls have any opinions or advice? Thanks

if you're an outgoing person i don't think you'll meet anymore people than you would in the high-rises than de neve...i lived in rieber my first year and the courtside (sunset village) the next and i came out with closer friends livining in SV...but yeah generally speaking de neve and sunset are probably the most quiet...dykstra is probably the "liveliest" place to live :)

yo! representing Sproul 2N/7N from back in the day! i would live in the high rises. It's the best way to meet people. You'll get put in a triple, but you'll be fine.

I live in De Neve and I'm a first year. Basically, you floor is what you make of it. Our floor is relatively outgoing and we horse around in the halls and stuff. The doors were all open first quarter, but now you just knock and people let you in.

However, if your floor sucks, then it'll be quiet as hell. I have friends that live in De Neve and their floors suck. It's like quiet enough to hear a pin drop.

Additionally, I wouldn't limit yourself to just meeting people on your floor. I mean, yeah you're forced to meet them when they live on your floor, but you need to get out and meet people from other places also.

As far as being a good place to live, my vote is definitely for De Neve. EVERYBODY tells me how much nicer it is that I have my own bathroom. Also, it's newer and you get your own air-conditioning/heater thermostat. Next year, you're also going to get your own mailbox and your own dining hall (since it's opening in one week).

The downsides to De Neve are that your closet is smaller than the other halls, and that you don't get that "bond" you'd have with other people if you had shared a bathroom with them. I guess another downside to De Neve is that your cell phone (if you use Cingular) doesn't work unless you plaster yourself against the window.

A 2 Canyon Point, Representing

This is my second year in the suites and they're pretty good. I'm going to be living in Sproul next year as a SHA. And well, if you like your halls quiet (usually) you're better off in Canyon or Delta next year. IMO De Neve is like the middle ground between the high rises and suites, I've spent some time in there and they're actually pretty nice. But a lot has to do with the people you live with. My house is pretty wild, we go skating late at night and we ocassionally have fat lan parties playing CS. So, I think you'll be great as long as you don't get stuck with a bunch of losers who yell at you to be quiet all the time.

Well.... De Neve is a lot nicer. The Halls are more fun...

Halls
Pros: More fun (maybe), more people, doors open directly into the rooms, cheap
Cons: Dirty, old, smelly, far

De Neve:
Pros: Pretty, clear, your own bathroom, more 2nd years, closer to campus proper
Cons: Cost (~1500 more), quite as death, the lay out of the room makes it hard to see inside from the hallway

While we are on the topic of UCLA-- maybe we shoul have an ATOT UCLA Meeting? Maybe even in person.. once the break is over? I think that would be sort of cool. Let me know what you think.

Ya, we had one a while back. I was the only first year to show up, and it was pretty dumb since we just met and didn't do much. Hans basically was in charge of most of the conversation. If you want to organize another meeting where people will actually show up, then I suggest you start a thread about it and see if there's interest.

Just curious, but what the heck do you guys talk about at an ATOT get together? I mean like LAN parties are cool, but people just get together and stare at each other or something? :)

being a fourth-year i don't know what the de neve-r living situation is like but i will say this: living in a high-rise pretty much guarantees you're gonna meet a lot of people. i was a PA in sunst my second year and i also met a lot of people that year by virtue of my job, but i don't think i would have had i not been a PA. you have your entire second year to live in the cushy digs....i say you rough it your first year like most others and do the high-rises. yeah, the communal bathrooms are horrendous, but that's what flip-flops are for. :D

live in a res hall. I made the one of the worst mistakes of my life living in courtside or crapside which we called it. moved to reiber 2nd year, but its just not the same as when you are a freshman still. ANYWAYS, YOU MISS OUT SO MUCH NOT LIVING IN RES HALLS. I lived in courtside house 7 i think, first floor and rieber 2 south. The bathrooms are definitely not worth it. especially if you are a guy , who cares, its a freaking bathroom man.

i'd still choose res halls cuz sunset and de neve is really hit or miss with the socialness - you could be social but the other people in your house/floor can be really anti social.

if you want to avoid athletes for sure, stay away from the suites. they all congregate there their second year.

i lived in sproul my first year, and have been in sunset the last two. i'll be in sunset again next year. (yeah i'm a fourth year in the dorms...)

as for the UCLA ATOT meet, the first one this year we all stood around, got food, talked, and so on. if we wanna do more we need to plan it better. but good job by kareathon for planning the first one. people showed up. :)

also, the new building in de neve will open (a building) and it will NOT be all doubles... no way housing will EVER do that... we accept way too many people to do that. the number of triples will rise substantially next year once again. your second year if you stay in the dorms try to secure a roommate so that they don't move you, because they can and will. (happened to a friend of mine this past year)
