Housing a G80

If you're thinking about getting a G80 card, you're obviously thinking about power and space. I've loved my Antec P180 for its versalitiy and quality. It houses my 7900 GTO's with room to spare. It has two 3.5 drive cages. Removing the top cage allows for plenty of room to accomadate a long card like the G80 solution. A 120mm intake fan is situated perfectly:

I don't plan to step-up to G80, but who knows. I'm very happy with twin GTO's running at GTX speeds. I'm awaiting the nVidia 6 series motherboards however.

I dont know what's the big deal about the length of G80? 28/29 cm?

I have a crappy $40 Aspire Dreamer case I got 5 years ago and I measured there is more than enough room for a 30cm card.

Which means any ATX Mid Tower which adheres to proper specifications should have no problems fitting a 30cm videocard and you don't need a huge case like everyone is talking about to fit the card.

A Lian Li PC-7B II Plus should be able to fit this card, since it has a large empty gap between the drive cage and the floppy cage.

Depends on how many HDD's you have/where they are.
My 7800GT is a bit of a squeeze because I have HDD's in most slots, so anything longer would require serious reorganisation (and using some adapters to fit HDD's in optical bays).
There is about 1 1/4" space between the end of the card and where a drive + power connector would come to.

Oh, I thought I'd post a pointless topic just to bait flamers such as yourself. After all, the forums are solely intened to generate controversy aren't they?

It's bittersweet, this place. It's a great source for information, if you can contend with the narcissism and condescending overtones...

On Video forum? No, just a random person who showed up. If you want nothing but rude people you should post in the off topic forum...

Helpful info, thanks! I have a LianLi V1200 so I have like 6 extra inches :p Unless the cards end up being like 2x size, then it won't fit.

Unless...

Damn, I really don't wanna take the HDDs out of the top rack in my P180...I guess I might have to when I get the G80.

The bottom rack accomodates 4 drives, so unless you have >4 drives the bottom rack is better anyways. Less heat by your motherboard, and the bottom section just exhausts via the PSU.

I, for one, am glad you posted the pics! Building a new box and figured it would fit the P180. Glad to have confirmation. :)

The Antec Sonata will not accomodate the 8800GTX, as far as I can tell. It seems like the card would be about half an inch too long. Oh well.

I know, but for me HDDs just can't go vertically...it's against my religion.:)

Right now my 7900GTO JUST fits in there with the PCI-e power cable sitting in between the 2 HDDs. Hopefully I can do the same with the 8800GTS.

There is legitimate concerns for wether the current case a person has or plans to get combined with the new 8800GTX. And not all midtower cases will house them. Even if the case does conform to the ATX standard there may be things in the way inside the case. Internal fans and airducts comes to mind. So people do need to be aware of the 8800GTXs length. If I was the OP I would probably have posted this in the Case section but i dont see any harm with what he was trying to do. Not enough to flame him anyway.

like I said guys, I wasn't trying to flame this guy in anyway but merely doubting the usefulness of the thread based on the topic at hand. I even commented on how nice his rig was. I guess I could have just replied with WRONG FORUM. Anyways, sorry I rained on your parade. I guess at first I took this thread as " I love my PC and you should too" but at a second glance this could be useful to someone. Anyhow, nice setup! Props to sli'ed GTO's. Hopefully they are powering a nice 30 incher....... oh and by the way, A flamer I am not

Housing the card is one problem: the other is finding someone to sell it to later on.

Somebody buying used hardware when the G80 is no longer top dog isn't likely to have a case that is as advanced as early adopters.

Or just don't sell the cards. I still have my GeForce2 Pro and my 6800GT (the two most expensive cards I've bought). Amazing how well both have lasted too (though the GF2 is now relegated to 2D and Win9x duties only).
