Household Air Conditioner

aircooled

My Rheem HVAC is about 6+ years old, either it's just paricularly hot this rear or maybe it's time for a recharge (whatever they use nowadays besides freon). It just doesn't seem to be cooling as well this year.

Does that sound about right time wise? 6 years?

Can I do it myself? or just call a pro?

What kind of money are we talking about?

Guy at work has a 6 year old unit that needed a recharge (it ran totally out). The maintenance guy charged $150 or to fill it up. He said it has a small leak (it shouldn't ever lose refrigerant) but it's cheaper to keep getting it filled up for $150 every 5-6 years than pay for the repair.

I get my furnace and A/C inspected every spring for $75 (includes 1lb. freon). That price also gets me a 15% 'discount' on parts should I need any work. Haven't had any problems so far.

Except that a leak could quite possibly only get worse?
