House prices in California suck...

My sister took a trip back east and was noticing that for a 2 bed, 1 bath house here you can get a 4000 square foot place on an acre next to a golf course. So I took some looking around. According to the census, California's median household income is just 10% more than national, and per capita is almost the same, but housing prices are double.

Anyone think they'll go down any time soon, or should I move out of state if I want to think about owning a home w/o 60% of my income going to mortgage?

Everything is expensive in CA. I'm planning to move to Boston, New York, New Jersey (OOL) or Washington DC when I graduate.

As long as there are people that can afford to buy here they wont go down, and there always seems to be.

Nevada has awesome prices on nice new houses etc etc, if you can handle the heat.

I'm considering trying in a couple years on going to Reno as a casino tech. I'm assuming they pay well (or atleast comparably) and I'm still close enough for visiting family on a whim.

See we agree Nevada 😀

A friend of mine, his daughter just moved to Nevada and he was telling me about her house and how nice it was for the price. I have looked at them from the outside when driving around there and its amazing what you can get for under 200k.

Housing Prices here in Boston suck like they do in CA. Plus the weather here isn't anywhere close to being as nice. Try Southern Oregon!

Oregon isnt bad if you like rain.

House prices in the midwest are good, assuming you don't move into one of the housing "bubbles" in an urban sprawl area around a big city.

So if you want great weather year round you are going to have to pay a premium!

Yep which = California hehehe.

So don't buy a house in CA. I am renting, and the rents have come down a lot in Silicone Valley. Apartment I just leased for $925/month and 1 month a year free was renting for $1600 during the boom.

Houses prices in Vancouver suck. In fact I'm in IT and I can't even afford to buy a house in this market. The best I can hope for is a condo or maybe a small townhouse.

I've already lost out on two places because of bidding wars.

And gee it isn't even sunny here year around.

Renting!=gain equity. Besides, my cousin and his roommates are paying $1300/mo for rent. Which I consider nuts.

Well that depends on whether you think we are in a bubble or not. When a 3 bedroom house is going for over $1M here, I'll pass. 😉

There is not thing wrong with lots of free water.
IMHO, Oregon coast have to be the best loaction to live in the US. I live in Victoria & the median household income is about $34,600 USD while the average house cost $250,000 USD, and the weather here is the best in Canada.

Just hop across the water to Victoria & you will get an average of 30% wage cut & only about 15% cheaper housing. However, the weather is much nicer....1/2 the rain & 4 time the sunshine.

depends where back east...not in the metro D.C. area, that's for sure.

If you go north, sure...you go far enough south, though, and it's pretty good. Not what they have down in Texas, but better than, say, Montgomery County, or the like.

Just another reason to never move to California.

And AvesPKS, you need to change your sig. the 'Cuse is the National Champs now!
