That makes no sense to me. Explain the climate in which a center-right democrat would thrive as an authoritarian ruler. Dude would lose support from the party day 1. But ok, "in theory" ... yet historically we've seen nationalistic fascism and communism tread those waters.. at least the history I am aware of. Educate me.

What he is saying is that an authoritarian sees politics as a means to an end. They’ll be the champions of progressive causes if it gets them where they want and as we’ve seen, they’ll happily play the conservative if they need to as well.

Have you seen our periodic postings of political compass?
Helps to clarify the difference between the left/right and up/down concepts.

What I mean is, the use of force is a means to an end. Doesn't matter which end.

You may have a point, as you explained the middle "may" not have the stomach for such things. But being an extremist does not necessarily mean one believes in greater redistribution. It may simply be a social or "moral" crusade where the use of force seems justified. Nothing inherently ties it to far side of the economic scale.

Authoritarian -> singular party rulership, right? Same people on top 20-30-40 years before the next king is "selected". Throughout history power has *always* corrupted, it is gonna descend into oligarchy and nepotism and from there the centrist economic scale is foobar'ed ... The only way mankind have, to my knowledge, EVER been able to counter our corruptible nature is via separation of powers. Without separation, all goes to shit, either to the left or to the right.
