We should have seen this coming, but it was still a surprise. The House of Saud has been straying from American influence ever since MBS arrested half his family and took over. Things only got worse after Khashoggi’s murder, and last year MBS extended Putin a lifeline by cutting oil production and keeping prices high.

Now they’ll be reestablishing ties with Iran. Never thought I’d see Wahhabis and Shiites working together but here we are.

“There is no way around it — this is a big deal,” said Amy Hawthorne, deputy director for research at the Project on Middle East Democracy, a nonprofit group in Washington. “Yes, the United States could not have brokered such a deal right now with Iran specifically, since we have no relations. But in a larger sense, China’s prestigious accomplishment vaults it into a new league diplomatically and outshines anything the U.S. has been able to achieve in the region since Biden came to office.”

Publicly the Biden administration is saying there ok with this and it isn’t that big a deal. But the perception seems to be China is on the rise in this region.

Not a huge deal as yet as they had diplomatic relations under Obama in 2016.

What I am more interested in is does this push UAE more towards leaving Opec and towards the US?

Trump is the genius who killed the Iran nuke pact. Not "we." Splendid strategic move by China.

Iran would kept progressing towards building a nuke anyway.

Trump also hopes to abandon Ukraine. What a guy.
