12-31-2004 Republican leaders are considering a change in House ethics rules that could make it harder to discipline lawmakers

WASHINGTON - Republican leaders are considering a change in House ethics rules that could make it harder to discipline lawmakers.

Democrats and government watchdog groups denounced the proposed change.

"It would lower the standard of official conduct, and if that's the case, it would be the first time that it has been done since 1968,and it would be done on a completely partisan basis," said Jennifer Crider, spokeswoman for House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, on Friday.

"Members of the House should be kept to the highest ethical standard, not the lowest"

Fred Wertheimer, president of Democracy 21, a watchdog group, said the House Republican leaders' proposal "would fundamentally undermine and damage the House ethics rules, and would constitute the biggest backtracking we have ever seen on ethics standards in the House."

If House Republican leaders are allowed to prevail, they will have gutted the single most important ethics standard in the House and turned House Majority Leader Tom DeLay's multiple ethics transgressions into acceptable conduct for all House members," Wertheimer said.

Those have both houses of Congress, there's no room for ethics. Ethics is "hard work."

I don't get who supports this, are they idiots? I mean basically the concept is that the standards of conduct for the people that make the laws that goven this country are too high. Are they nuts? These guys are making the laws that govern the conduct of the entire country, they should be held to the highest possible standard. What the HELL is wrong with the Repubicans lately?

well, you wouldn't expect our elected officials to actually WORK for the people would you? Pretty soon they will have lower standards than McDonalds. It should be easy to get a job in Congress, all you will need is a criminal record

Damn right. But Clinton's poor choice to have an affair and lie about it got the Republicans up in arms. You would have thought he was tossing babies into the reflecting pool or something. Now, they think the government needs less ethics, but only because one of their guys was being less than ethical.

See, that's what's bugging me lately. These guys (not all Republicans, but some of them) suddenly want to make all these changes because they benefit them at the moment, not seeming to realize that as soon as they are out of power, those changes will bite them in the ass...hard. It's like they have no view of the big picture and are unable to look past whatever their current, narrow objective is.

Notice the neocon silence on this one?

There is a saying, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

What we are seeing here is the corruption of those in power. Republicans currently control the executive and legislative branches, although they do not have absolute control of the legislative, corruption is a gradual process with innocuous beginnings like this one where they want to insulate themselves from accountability of their misuse of power. The issue which maintains and enhances any democracy is accountability of those chosen to be in power. Once you take that out you are giving them a free hand and it's a slippery slope from there on.

Seeing what we saw in the first term of the current administration I wish the 51% who voted them back in power had given some thought to what they were doing.
