House considers removing 9/11 security measures

The House engaged in a spirited debate over post-Sept. 11 laws and practices, and whether they are overly broad and still viable nearly 13 years after the terror attacks. Lawmakers pressed to sunset the authorization given to the president to use military force, to end the indefinite detention of terror suspects captured on U.S. soil and to close the U.S. naval facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

I hope this goes through. 9/11 security measures are a burden to the public and provide very little in protection.

Sorry forgot the link.

Legislation to erase the Bush legacy is sorely needed.

A small measure of faith in government would be restored if they managed to act in favor of the Bill of Rights for once. Won't hold my breath expecting it to pass.

The issue is as it always was, the false sense of security many people want. Lots of people are more than willing to give up their privacy, there rights, and a good chunk of their money to have someone tell them they're "protected".

Fear of Terror Makes People Stupid

– You are 17,600 times more likely to die from heart disease than from a terrorist attack
– You are 12,571 times more likely to die from cancer than from a terrorist attack
– You are 1048 times more likely to die from a car accident than from a terrorist attack
–You are 404 times more likely to die in a fall than from a terrorist attack
– You are 87 times more likely to drown than die in a terrorist attack
–You are 12 times more likely to die from accidental suffocation in bed than from a terrorist attack
–You are 9 times more likely to choke to death on your own vomit than die in a terrorist attack
–You are 8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than by a terrorist
– You are 6 times more likely to die from hot weather than from a terrorist attack

This a great move by the House in my opinion. While the measures were well intentioned, the end result has been anything but. The sooner we are rid of some of these provisions the better.

Agreed and I think probably something generally agreed on at the grass roots level regardless of party.

Lets keep the ball rolling; everyone contact their senator and urge them to support/pass the bill once it gets to the Senate.

This is long overdue, but we need to get rid of and or reduce the authority of TSA and get rid of a lot of the laws implemented that shit all over US citizens constitutional rights for the "safety from terrorism". By the way do you have a link to that article where you got this info from for the OP?

I didn't know Guantanamo was still open. I guess it was just another broken promise on a bullet list for Obama. I'm glad, though, because it should stay open, and people with information related to terrorists should be subjected to whatever is necessary for safety.

The only thing that needs to be repealed is any homeland security /TSA bullshit, and any restrictions / hindrances on our citizens. I think those are obviously the most ineffective and inefficient, and tend to trample on our rights. Anything affecting non-citizen terrorists, or citizen terrorists should remain enacted.

Pretty hard to close it when congress won't let you.

And it's pretty hard to soften all the 9/11 security bullshit when Repubs take an all or nothing approach, like they did when it went to sunset last time...

They def rely on their flock having very short memories, that's for sure.

Well thats good I guess but when I read the title I had hoped for a bit more - like repealing the Patriot act and getting rid of the worthless budget sucking TSA.

Hey - to make it safer for everyone lets herd everyone into a tight group perfect for bombing before scanning them for 3.2 oz of water and tiny swiss army knives

The article was mainly about the defense budget.

Looking at article again, seems nothing might change.

So the question remains: who in the House rejected the amendments? There must be a record of who voted for and against these amendments.

sounds like a good idea but i sure as fuck dont have my hopes up

Why?

We weren't in a "post Pearl Harbor world" for this long. It makes sense they would start to pull back the legislation that was a direct result of 9/11.

This is a very good thing. Good for them. Good for everybody.

It's a start.

This is one of the most disgusting hypocritical post I've read in a while. You don't really give a damn about "rights" if you did you wouldn't post this garbage.
