House committee approves bill that would end door-to-door mail...

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/201...t-would-end-door-to-door-mail-for-15-million/

A House committee has approved a proposal that would end door-to-door mail delivery for millions of Americans in favor of communal or curbside boxes.
The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee approved the measure on an 18-13 party-line vote Wednesday. The bill would direct the U.S. Postal Service to convert 15 million addresses over the next decade to the less costly, but also less convenient delivery method.
Democrats objected to the plan, and efforts in recent years to win its adoption have failed.

Can some one tell how the fuck it cost money to delver to your house as opposed to curb side boxes? I guess for every foot a mail man walks he gets payed more? I don't get it!

meh...I've lived with those kinds of mailboxes since 1999. Not a big deal. Not the most convenient...but I've never had a problem with them either.

Republicans don't like the postal employee. They are unionized and vote and lobby Democratic. They don't mind fucking Americans to further their party's power. It's a party that needs to die in so many ways.

I can see why the Republicans are like this. I have the book authored by Glen Beck entitled Arguing With Idiots and in the book it talks about the post office and all the red tape. It's just nuts! Union after union and shit that is part of USPS. It's no wonder why they can't make a damn profit!

misleading headline.

the change would impact a few million addresses. not all addresses, and there are areas where this is done already. Its not like the us postal service delivers to the door in ever spot.

But that wont stop liberals from fear mongering about how this is the end of the world.

The cost savings also seem substantial at ~2billion a year.

Meh down here all the newer neighborhoods already have curb side boxes. If a package is too big to fit into the special larger boxes they bring the package to the house.

Where I live and at my new home down in NC, the mailbox is right at edge of the driveway. No problems for USPS to just drive up and put the mail in. I have seen those communal mailboxes, they are somewhat small and in a lot of cases, hard to check without going a few blocks in some developments to get to them (I have seen them just after the entry gates in some places)

All our boxes are out at the road and for some, the road is not within sight from their homes. The very few developments we do have all have communal mailboxes. The other choice is to rent a box at the Post Office.

There is nothing that will come out of a Republican controlled Congress that will make the left happy. So it's just not worth the effort to argue with them about it. The Post Office needs to save money. Congress has come up with a way for that to happen. Some people will experience a minor inconvenience in a world that is continually less dependent on the service the Post Office provides. Boo-hoo.

When I was a child, the Doctor came to our house. Now, I must go to him. The horror, the horror!

Cut govt jobs to create employment. Cut taxes to reduce deficits. Cut spending to stimulate the economy.

Cut, cut, Cut!

Why do you think you know something?

I had to shorten it on ATOT. I added ellipsis's.

They could also cut funding to these fucked up countries like Pakistan where we give 2.5 billion to!

USPS is supposed to not be funded by tax payer money. The money generated from stamps and other services is supposed to support the organization.

Unless congress repeals the law that required the USPS to pre-fund all current and future pension obligations there is no hope of it ever getting out of the red. It is not realistic to expect the USPS to be self supporting yet still meddle in their operations and not let them pare back on personnel costs. Both sides are guilty of this since they have services they don't want to see cut/reduced since their constituents will complain.

I agree until their pension fund requirement is fulfilled or congress rolls back their required pace of funding they will continue to be in the red. My point to the OP was if we stopped sending money overseas it wont help USPS as they don't take tax payer money.

USPS costs FedEx and UPS money.

Not really. USPS once tried to compete with FedEx and UPS by setting up some low-cost delivery program. The plan backfired when FedEx and UPS showed up to take advantage of the discounted rates. Now USPS delivers packages for FedEx and UPS to rural areas, saving FedEx and UPS a ton of money on our dime.

USPS charges FedEx/UPS for the delivery. If USPS is losing money on the delivery, it is USPS's fault.

What's wrong with giving people a decent job.

My brother works for the post office. He makes $27 an hour. Has full benefits and a matching 401k. Why are so many people against this? Is it jealousy? Most Americans 20 years ago were enjoying the same pay my brother currently gets. He's able to support his family, and he's able to buy a house. We don't want people to live nice productive lives? In case anyone has forgotten our economy needs people to spend money for it to be healthy. Eliminate good paying jobs and you're essentially dooming our economy.

I don't see the big deal. It's only 15 million addresses. From the OP:

I don't believe I've ever had mail delivered directly to my house. IIRC, even as a kid, the mailbox has always been on the street and the postman drives by and drops your mail off in it. He never leaves his truck.

They are trying to bankrupt the US postal system and have been for years. They want to convert the postal service to private companies. Here are some links to some old articles that talk about what they really are doing.

Oh also this PBS that talks about the US postal service and many of the issues surrounding the Republicans trying to shut them down. http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/five-things/the-u-s-postal-service/11433/
