Why? Restoration is a decades-long process, and Canadia is serious about regulating oil industry impact on the environment. In the prairies, where there were no trees to replace, decommissioned well sites look the same or better after a year.

They going stat is that oil sands industry has planted 12 million trees, and the alberta boreal forest is a net carbon sink.

someone correct me if i'm wrong here, but it was George W Bush who essentially legalized fracking everywhere but Federally protected land which has led up to this.

i have no idea why Colorado, of all states, is the one to go full retard with fracking though. from what i understand, if someone owns the mineral rights under your land there they can come in and drill on your property to reach their rights and there isn't shit you can do about it.
The strange thing about this is that they don't have to be anywhere near you to drill under your property.
Horizontal drilling can extend more than 1 mile(1.6 km) from the vertical well bore. After the fracking well is fully drilled and encased, fracking fluid is pumped down into the well at extremely high pressure, in some cases exceeding 9,000 pounds per square inch (62,050 kilopascals).

If you don't own the mineral rights to your property you can expect for it to happen especially if you are sitting upon valuable resources.

I live in Austin so no gas or oil wells nearby but if you go north to Dallas or south of San Antonio the well density is pretty absurd. It's comparable to parts of Colorado. This picture is from northeast Dallas and you can see people are literally surrounded by gas wells. Every one of those little white rectangles is a well.

Have you ever heard of tar sands strip mining? Its even worse on the environment than fracking destroying habitat long the way. However, there should be some reasonable limits on fracking such as prohibiting it in and around residential communities. I used to be opposed to fracking until I had to do some scholarly research on it and it was then that I had my eyes opened to the bigger picture. While fracking is far from perfect it is much safer on the environment than some of the alternatives that are available.

The tremors caused by some fracking operations are a result of the strata and is an area that researchers don't have enough conclusive data. The material that I read states that the shape of the rock formations determine the waves which I believe should not be allowed near residential areas. Drilling companies should be held accountable for any damage to homes resulting from them.

Canada should be ashamed of the damage that they are allowing in the Fort McMurray area from that shit...the minimal effort that they are putting into protecting the environment when there is money to be made is astounding.

It's remarkable how people don't pay attention to the details, like the 9 news piece linked in the OP. The well in question is a vertical gas well drilled in 1993, before the neighborhood was built up nearby. Fracking has nothing to do with it.

Local governments should exercise good judgement and refuse to issue building permits around an existing fracking well.

this happened last monday and saw the fire on my commute home. If some how this house explosion was caused by oil/natural gas drilling, heads are going to roll. For those of you not familiar with drilling, its a free for all out here in Colorado, they throw up rigs very close to homes. My co-worker who lives just 7 blocks from where this house exploded had a fracking rig get erected 300 feet from his house.

That sucks for your friend but according to the first lines of the video this example is a bit different.

The well existed prior to the homes. Perhaps the developers who decided building a bunch of houses right next to a gas well should be found at least partly at fault.

Along with the officials that approved their build permit.

The awesome part about fracking is that while it is has been peddled by the right wing as "energy independence" and most of its supporters are rural right wing, almost every problem it causes specifically targets rural people. It's about as close to literally shooting themselves in the foot as you could possibly get without a gun.

I have friends that live in rural Ohio. Their neighbors signed over fracking rights to some oil company, and since about 2013 their wells pump out stinky yellow water that has been tested to be toxic. They vote Trump, lol. Serves them right. I hope they frack the F out of the entire midwest. Let them drink lubricants.

Studies have proven that faulty well jackets are the leading cause of contamination, however, its something that doesn't happen very often. Your friends should complain to the EPA and request that samples be taken to determine the actual source of the contamination so the correct actions can be taken.
