Damn, what a joy to wake up to. Yesterday it was extremely windy all day. Gusts of 40+ mph. It snowed most of the day but it was so windy that you couldn't tell it was really coming down. They had forecast from early in the day of a blizzard with 8-12+ inches of snow by this morning and extremely windy. Newspaper article

Sure enough... There was even thunder and lightning around 10:30pm. How the hell is that possible when it is snowing and 15° F out??

I knew last night that two of my classes were cancelled since the prof was stuck in Detroit due to weather. That left one today that I didn't really plan to go to anyway, but turns out when I wake up nice and late after 12pm, I find out MTU has cancelled anyway!

First time in 3 years that the weather has been anywhere near bad enough to close Michigan Tech.

So rather than dig out my car, do the 100 things of homework, projects, reports, coding, etc that I need to do, as well as get to Walmart and buy some food, I thought I'd take a few pictures and share them with you all. :)

edit: Pics turned out kind of dark. My camera didn't see the need for a flash, but I guess I should've forced it.

Looking down from our doorway to the steps

Another view - those are like 4 steps under that drift

In 30 minutes I might be able to get my car out, IF there was any room for more snow

You can almost make out my tires - thanks a lot wind

My roommates never shovel, and this time they did except they quit halfway through so these are our new steps

Another view of the drifted snow covering my tires

Though maybe I shouldn't complain, the people across the street seem to have it worse

Now I think I need to get started on all this stuff. It's weird, my 3rd floor room has been ridiculously cold the past two days. Normally it is the warmest in the house, obviously. At about 1pm when I turned on my computer, the case temp was reported at 50° F! So my room was about that.

Wow there was actually thunder and lightining there? Yeah ya know it's bad when they close Tech for snow. ;)

It was harsh as fvck here too last night... in some spots half of the road was drifted over in like a foot or more of snow.

I used to hate it when the fvckers in the snow plows would fill the driveway with snow and ice...Like shoveling a driveway isn't bad enough!
I don't miss that BS one little bit.

My sister in law lives in Houghton. I'll have my wife call her and see if she is enjoying the weather.

Duluth, MN (3 hrs north of me), as of last night, was getting 24" of snow and had 46 mph sustained winds, with gusts of 60+. I hear they ended up with 8 foot drifts today. They ended up pulling the plows off the streets last night.

Presumably, it just rolled on to Houghton, MI :)

Yes, lighting is possible during snowstorms. It generally happens during heavy/fast snowfall and is generally cloud to cloud, I believe.

No, he lives in Houghton Lake. Hell, Michigan is quite a ways south from there :p

Heh sorry the contemporary idea of hell is rather pleasing to me... being stuck in the frigid artctic circle though, that's a different story :D

No, Houghton Lake is downstate MI. He lives in Houghton, MI in the Upper Peninsula... About in the middle of the Keweenaw Peninsula.

I used to live in Houghton, MI.

It's very scenic there during autumn/spring/summer.

Yeah it's beautiful then. Spring is the best for waterfalls... there's a good amount in the immediate area. Hiking and camping, lotsa places. Swimming... I love it up there during non-snow seasons.

This thread has flooded back memories of mine when I used to live right next to the mall in Houghton in middle school. It was the first house on Green Acres Rd, a very nice light blue and cozy house. I wonder who lives there now.

Well, it didn't turn out too bad. It only took me about 15 minutes to clear snow out to back my car out and another 10-15 to clear away the rest of the parking spot. Of course, it had to snow much of the evening and night so I had to shovel again this morning (another 4-6 inches, but very little wind thankfully).

It's cool to hear that some AT members are familar with the area!

And not sure of Green Acres Rd, but next time I'm out there I'll look for it! :)

Hmm, that really doesn't look any worse than the weather the first couple winters that I was up at MTU (00-01), and we certainly never had classes cancelled.

Is everyone up there getting soft or something? Sheesh! ;)

Awesome pictures...just run them through auto color correct in Photoshop and they will clean up nicely!

I just got into Steamboat Spring, CO and hear that they have received over 6 FEET of snow in about on week. Driving over Rabbit Ears pass saw huge drifts, like 6 to 10 feet+! Pictures will come shortly (Can I hijack two consecutive snow picture threads in a week?) ;)
