EDIT: Retail as in off the shelf...... Not homemade.

Hottest "retail" sauce out there HANDS DOWN?
I want the hottest without going the pure capsaicin route. Can you guys agree on one?

Please post a LINK to this sauce. Thanks

Well, depends on what you mean by "retail." There's a big gap between what you can find in your grocery store and pure capsaicin. And the majority of that big gap is made up of stuff you would really only want to use as an ingredient, not a sauce. Dave's Gourmet is popular (particulary Dave's Insanity Sauce). Blair's is also popular. I like Blair's Sweet Death. It's not very hot (about 2x Tabasco), but it tastes good. I have a bottle of Blair's After Death (~25x Tabasco or 50k scoville units) that I put on chicken once... once. Never again.

Edit: The hottest sauce I've ever bought at a grocery store is Panola Extra Hot. I buy most of my hot sauces on the Internet or at a specialty store.

Yes. Pure capsaicin is 16 million scoville units and can cause chemical burns.

At 16 million, SU, I can't see how this would be safe. You know, if you get any of that on your hands, you definitely want to wash them good before going to urinate, especially if you're a dude.

A 5% OC spray will make you be very careful about how you shower after the effect wears off. At 100%, it will cause immediate chemical burns.

Yes, albeit not with pepper spray. With 10% OC spray. I'd rather get hit with my asp or shot with my 9mm...

I have a bottle of dave's temporary insanity sauce in the fridge. 57,000 scoville units, you can put it directly on your tongue without dying at least :)

I usually spread it on some chicken and then cook it up.

I also eat siriacha hot sauce on EVERYTHING, I love that stuff, anyone know the scoville on that?

As far as "off the shelf", are you speaking of the US only? Because we got some stuff in Panama called "Fire Bomb" I believe. My fellow shipmates were dipping toothpicks into the bottle, and sticking it in their mouth to see who cried first... It was entertaining. Made for some good Cruise Book DVD footage.

Also, there are many Thai reciped that call for sauces and peppers that are much hotter than you will find in the States. There is the American Indian pepper (can't remmeber the name) but it was used in rituals, not in cooking. So I'd look as a asian food place if I were you.

Well, if that is the case, then it greatly diminishes the chances of finding a link to the stuff, as most are found in relatively local markets, etc.

I'd say either Spontaneous Combustion or Dave's Insanity Sauce. Both are way way too hot for me, and even my GF (who loves the heat) thought those 2 were too hot. Remember, use cold beer (or other alcoholic drink) to quench the intense flames these sauces cause. Water will only make it worse.

Daves Insanity is about the hottest I have tried, that I can find locally anyway... goes good with eggs, but a small amount goes a long way!

If you are looking for a good hot sauce thats a good blend of 'heat' and flavor, try Melindas XXXXtra Reserve.... I love that stuff!

If you have a Cost Plus World Market nearby, you can usually find both there.

We use Dave's Insanity on a 1000-1 scale. Dip toothpick in till tip is damp. Swirl toothpick in Pot of something. (chile, spag sauce, pot roast ect)

We used to purchase Dave's Insanity on a regular basis... I used to love the stuff. (My wife would never ever ever touch any food that it had been added to.) It's a great ingredient for giving food a little kick without greatly altering the taste. A drop or two in bbq sauce completely changes the experience (for the better, in my opinion)

But, Dave's is far from the hottest on the market... It's pretty close, and one of the most available though...
I believe that title (without going to pure capsaicin) is Blair's 4am.

Or is it Blair's 3am?

One of those is rated at 2 million Scoville Units, rather than Dave's measely 51,000.
And, Dave's is more than hot enough.

I like the spicy mustard my chinese food place gives me. Stronger then most stuff I can find at the grocery store. Makes my nostrils flare every single bite. Great on a hero sandwich. :)
