I've been using some removable ide drive bays for some time now.

They work fine, but in order to get Windows (2k or XP) to recognize a drive, I have to open device manager, disable the appropriate IDE controller channel (in my case, secondary), do the swap, then re-enable the controller.

I, in my ultimate quest for laziness, am wondering if there is a way to automate this disable/enable process. Anyone know of a better method than using device mgr or perhaps a prog that will do the trick?

http://www.Computergate.com has some software that may work on XP but I'm not sure. And it may work only with certain mobile racks. With Win98, all you have to do is set the drive to Removable in DevMgr.

Right Click'drive in Explorer->go to hardware tab-> select removable drive->click properties->go to polocies tab->select optomize for quick removal.

This may take care of your problem, noit sure tho.
