How can I secure my internet surfing on a unsecured wireless network? eg. Starbucks

I can create a VPN connection back to my XP Pro machine at my house. I'll be able to share my files, but how would I secure my connection while browsing the internet? Does XP Pro VPN also enable ICS, so I use my XP Pro like a proxy?
