Hotspot like one at Starbuck and Noble & Barnes bookstore

I am curious if I take my laptop to any hotspot place, do I need to leave SSID on or off?

You don't turn SSID on or off on a client machine, a pc card driver. that is done on the AP and will be dictated by the hotspot. SSID broadcasting will almost certainly be on at a hotspot. All you have to worry about is if your in infrastructure or AD Hoc on the client and if they have any security setup, unlikely.

However, I believe Barnes & Noble uses the Boingo subscription service. So (unless you have a subscription) I would look around for a coffee shop that would have free WiFi. Okay, so I'm a cheapskate. 😛

Definitely make sure your laptop isn't setup as an Ad Hoc network. Doing that broadcasts your laptop out so other people can connect to it which is not a good idea.
