Hotmail and randomly deleted messages

Hi everyone,

My girlfriend logged into her hotmail account tonight and discovered to her horror that all messages from the past year are gone. She's obviously distraught, but I'm hoping that there's a slim chance that this is somehow a glitch and that her messages will be back later, even though all signs are pointing to her account being lost and an old backup has been restored. Anyway, I was wondering if this happened to anyone, and if so, were you able to retrieve your messages? I've sent an email to the good people of Microsoft, and the website says they'll respond within 24 hours, so I guess we'll see what happens. I'm expecting the worst though. Thanks in advance for any replies.
 
Thanks for the reply, Xionide, but this isn't a case of an idle account. She logs into Hotmail daily. Plus, only *some* of her messages were deleted, not all. It really does look like someone screwed up and tried to restore from backup, except the backup was a year old. Anyway, I'm still hoping they can fix it... but knowing Hotmail and MS's record... I wouldn't bet my life savings on it. =(

Edit: The same thing could happen with gmail... since it's a free service, you could lose your messages and you'd have no recourse... unless you download your messages with POP of course. I've been using POP mail since my college days so web-based email will always be a "novelty" in my mind.

Anyone reading what I wrote should be able to ascertain that I know gmail offers POP: "unless you download your messages with POP of course." My point is that since email has become mainstream, your mom or dad won't know to download messages with POP, since it means you have to mess around with client settings. And just so you know, I'm never gonna get gmail, and I'll never understand why gmail is so "great." And yes, we know the fvckin' TOS says email will be deleted if the account is idle. Smartass.

Xionide offered you some valid advice. It's up to you whether you accept that advice or not, but really, there's no reason to get upset like that.
 
they are probably just upgrading her account to 250 MB like almost everybody else. about a month ago i read in one of the hotmail threads that someone lost all of their old e-mails when they were upgrading his accounts, so i just connect to it with outlook and download the old messages from 99 that i still have in there.

With responses like this I don't understand how you can function in society. What stops you from punching a person in the face after they tip you for sucking there dick. I was trying to help you understand what was going on. You didn't say you knew everything in the TOS in your original post. So I misunderstood you when you were talking about pop, bfd.
