So now where is the best deal on the Abit Kt7-RAID board? I've been seriously thinking of getting an Thunderbird or Duron and this board to replace my BP-6/celery setup.

Yeah, I should have mentioned the T-bird 900 is going into my A7V to keep my Geforce DDR happy :).

i love it. same story every time. here is an example.

1. Hot deal, retail ______(fill in the blank) chip for $XX.XX
2. that is not a Hot Deal! i saw them on pricewatch for $YY.YY (XX.XX - 20%) plus $14 shipping.
3. Those are OEM.

this just proves that history repeats itself;
:)

on a more serious note; has anyone heard any more news about possible dual duron /tbird rigs?

>>dual duron /tbird rigs?

Yes and history will repeat itself yet again with everyone and their mother going to buy thenext "BP6" dual *rig*. I thought a RIG was a big truck, not some wimpy piece of melted sand and solder, anyhow...for history to repeat itself everyone will get the Dual RIG and realize that a very small performance gain they get isn't worth it, e-bay chip #2 and then buy a RAID card, only to realize what EVERY review has said about RAID: If you use it for A/V editing, its great, otherwise don't bother.

greg: Haven't you realized that it isn't about speed/performance? It's just bragging rights! ;)

Does Duron 700 need the pencil thng to connect the bridge for overclocking (like Durno 600)?

Thanks,

Hi, ingenue007,

You wrote:

Can you tell me what arctic silver is?
How does alpha HS compare to using TaiSol fan in another thread?

Thanks,

AndrewR;
how true. i can not tell the performance diff between a duron 850 and a 1000...
it's all about the bragging rights...

That's not exactly true regzrding performance not being noticeable. I have 3 durons all running at different speeds and gaming-wise you can tell the difference. My duron 600 at 1 gig clearly blows away my duron 800 or duron 900. I have dumped all my celery rigs and have not looked back. I say if you are running P3 or something, think before u leap. If you are running celery, don't even think twice, "just do it!". I have a friend that has a P3 oc'ed to 1 gig and my duron runs pretty close benchmark-wise. I get like 165 fps in Q3A while he gets a few frames more. Of course your mileage may vary.

Also, if you don't want to buy two CPUs... you can pick up the awesome Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card for $82 as well :) Grab the Duron 700 + Santa cruz for $164 - $30... not a bad deal!

There's a point of diminishing returns though. There is hardly any noticeable difference between 800, 900, 1000 speeds. You get a few ,more fps in a game that already gets 80-100 fps? Big deal. It's not going to help your web browsing either. Heh. Most people have no real need or use for 900 or 1000 mhz. There is no reason to dump a celeron system for a duron. If you need a new system duron is the better choice but the celeron does just fine. I had a BX motherboard on my second system. Put a celeron 633 in there and it's overclocking at 950 mhz. Way more performance than I need.

i have a duron600 @ 897 / 256 pc133 / 3dfx 3000 agp (this might be the cause)

Whoever asked about arctic silver, it is supposed to be the best thermal compound there is. I currently am using (or was using) the radio shack stuff, until I popped off my heatsink today and saw the attrocious sight.. its all caked and nasty.. not smooth like when I put it on at all. I've never used that arctic silver, but I'm ordering some tonight.

Be careful with the arctic silver stuff. I destroyed a duron 600 that ran at 1 gig with it. Basically, I put a small drop of the stuff on it, just like I do with the non-conductive white stuff. I slap the heatsink on and power on. Nothing. Took it off, and saw that the small arse drop I put on had squirted out the sides and touched one of the caps that are on the side of the core. Needless to say, I destroyed a chip that ran fine while trying to get it to run better. :(

Luckily, I bought two of these chips, but the other one only ran at 950.
