Read the book Shake Hands with the Devil by Roméo Dallaire (the general in charge at the time).

General in charge of what? UN forces or Hutu or Tutsi militias?

UN

Fresh Air interview with Roméo Dallaire

I've met Dallaire. That poor tortured man...y'know he tried to kill himself twice after coming home? He's filled with so much guilt that he didn't die over there himself, didn't sacrifice his troops to save the people.

Being a Canadian soldier, I can tell you that, collectively, we view Rwanda as one of our greatest failures. It's also a reason that many canadian troops refuse to serve on UN tours anymore. After seeing what happened to the Belgians, and after being told over and over again to hold fire at seeing atrocities...not to mention the big freakin' blue bullseye helmets...I'd never be on one. It's as good as painting a target on yourself.

sounds like a porno

It is, cept there are no porn stars having sex and alot of people die because of some greedy heartless bastards in a third world country.

I enjoyed the movie, but did think it was overrated a bit.

Ikonomi, how was the HBO movie? I really like Idris Elba in The Wire.

It was pretty well made, they glossed over a lot of important details, but the scope of the movie wasn't really able to handle all that info

I haven't seen it yet but I intend to. I saw a documentary about Rwanda a few months ago and what happened there was an absolute disgrace ignored by the international community.

Couldn't agree more. Didn't really effect me, I kept wondering when I'd feel sad. I mean it was slightly touching some, but I mean at the end it said "1 million corpses". In NO WAY did I get the feeling it was that massive. It seemed like bullies killed a few dozen ppl to me...I just couldn't feel the power of it. Ah well.

very sad...i have a friend...she was granted asylum by the US...her parents and her family was killed in rwanda...imagine going through life having witnessed such a thing...
