When I boot up my system it starts off at about 45C then goes up to 50C over the first 30 mins or so. This is fine except I never turn my computer off for very long and after about 3 days it has got to 55C while idling. This still isn't really a problem but today MoHAA and Tribes 2 have both locked up on me and at both times the cpu was at 59C to 60C. This is a problem.
As I type this Winbond Hardware Monitor reports my system temperature at 33C and CPU temperature at 55C. I intend to buy some Arctic Silver III tomorrow and "lap" my heatsink as my friend called it and see what happens. If this doesn't do it then I might have to take out of my GF4 Ti4200/4400 fund and get a better hsf. Currently I'm using the hsf that came with my Athlon XP and my Enermax (unsure of exact model right now) psu also has a fan.
I just want peoples opinions on this. If the Arctic Silver III doesn't do the job then I don't want to shell out much more money or it will take me forever to upgrade my graphics card.

I just realised that I didn't mention that currently I'm using the heat pad that comes with the Athlon XP.

Are you o/c'ing?

You would be better off dropping the voltage if you are, or buying a more efficient heatsink like the Thermalright SK6 for 30.00

What motherboard are you using? The retail HSF should be enough. Mine kept my system around 45C under full load.

Invest a few dollars into the heatsink I mentioned above (or another quality one of your choice), and add a few case fans.

John, did you read that I don't want to spend a lot?
Thermalright SK6 - £37.13 + £5 delivery = £42.13 ($59.93)
"A few case fans" - £10+ each ($14.23)
Total - £52.13 ($74.15)

No way am I spending that much.

Kyle, you failed to define what "a lot" meant in your budget. However when you said If this doesn't do it then I might have to take out of my GF4 Ti4200/4400 fund and get a better hsf it indicated to me that you could spare 30.00US on a quality HSF. If you currently have zero case fans, then try adding those first.

I'm having some heat related issues myself.

I just put together my first system that has an Athlon XP 2000+. I have a generic heat sink fan that was packaged with the cpu, specifically a Foxconn. :disgust:

Here are my specs:

idle cpu temperature = 51 C
idle case temperature = 24 C

My mobo is a Gigabyte GA-7DX. I have two panaflos in this setup, which explains the decent case temps. I am using Arctic Silver III.

I have been considering buying a Thermalright SK-6 and throwing a panaflow on it.... nothing bets Cu as a heat conducter;).

Anyone have any advice for me, either in terms of lowering cpu temps or the SK-6???

All help will be greatly appreciated!:)

Hmm, sell your hot XP and grab a Northwood. The RAM carries over. You won't be out much in the pocket book... Trust me, wasting your money on expensive high-end coolers and noisy Delta fans is a nice habit to relieve yourself of. :D

I'm seeing lots of numbers, but no mention of actual system problems. If everything is working fine, ignore the inaccurate temp readings.

Is this a new or chronic problem? Have you checked that you properly installed the heatsink?

That is well below a temp that you should be worried about. Unless it is giving you *real* problems, don't worry about it.

(This forum is filled with people who are obsessed about keeping their CPUs as cool as possible, but for all practical purposes, unless you are overclocking, heat isn't an issue.)

You are probably one of those guys that has a poorly ventilated computer desk that recycles hot air back into the case.

I took a side of the case off last night.

All of case on:
System 33C
CPU 55C

Side of case off:
System 33C
CPU 52C

Room fan at full speed at computer with side of case off:
System 28C
CPU 49C

Do you have thermal protection in the BIOS set to turn off the PC at 60ºC?

Was it stable with the case side off?

If so, I'd say that an 80mm exhaust fan would probably help quite a bit.
