This is the lowest OEM price I've seen lately from a legit dealer. You have to purchase a piece of hardware but it can be a 99 cent CDROM cable. UPS shipping for me was $10.85.

Can anyone point me to step by step instructions on how to make it feel and look exactly like win2k short of reinstalling win2k?

For instance, where's the toolbar at the bottom? How the hell do I turn off the pop-up win explorer when I put a cd in? (I thought I turned it off and said don't ask again, but it keeps doing it).

And a normal start menu?

Don't buy XP Pro OEM. You might as well just steal a copy because OEM is not legal unless it was shipped with a computer. Microsoft changed their license and now, your license is invalid if you just buy a copy. Total ripoff.

Hmm, everyone and there Uncle sells oem's on EGay, and they aren't shut down. I should know, I have sold them before, and then again I have been shutdown by MS and Ebay for MS software, but never an oem one.

My point is, why buy something that is worthless. Using an OEM version is the same as just copying an unlocked copy of XP ... why pay over a hundred bucks for an illegal copy???

"Under Microsoft?s Distribution and Preinstallation Agreement, computer stores such as Googlegear are only allowed to sell Microsoft OEM hardware/software products in conjunction with a corresponding number of hardware items. The agreement does not specify what type of computer hardware, so you may choose anything in our Hardware or Systems departments -- even a cable. No software, or CD/DVD/zip media.

Here are some examples to help explain this policy.

1) If you wish to purchase Microsoft Windows 98 (OEM) you must also purchase a hardware item, such as a hard drive or cable, in the same order. If you purchase two copies you must purchase two hardware items, and so on.

2) If you wish to purchase a Microsoft Natural Elite PS/2 Keyboard (OEM), you must also purchase a hardware item such as a motherboard or memory chip, in the same order. If you purchase two such keyboards you must purchase two additional hardware items, and so on.

3) If you wish to purchase Microsoft Windows 98 (OEM) software and a Microsoft Natural Elite PS/2 Keyboard (OEM) then you need to purchase one additional non-MS hardware item, in the same order. Why only one? The Microsoft Keyboard counts as the hardware item bought in conjunction with the Office XP (OEM) software. But then, a hardware item needs to be bought in conjunction with the Microsoft Keyboard (OEM).

*Please note! An order for Microsoft OEM products, which does not contain the appropriate number of additional hardware items, will be canceled."

I've got my XP Pro looking just like Win98.

Without giving you all the step by steps, the easiest thing is to go to Help and type in "Start Buttom Classic Look"

That will get you on the way to getting XP to look, imho, more reasonable, i.e., without the big buttons and all that other crap.

btw, the help function in XP is great. Just type in what it is you want to do or whatever your question is, and you should get a workable answer.

Good luck

Isn't it ironic that a company that broke the law gets to enforce it too? I wish they'd throw a couple of Micro$oft execs in jail along with the bootleggers.
