I think the regular price of the 400GB was about $220-230, and the regular price of the 320GB was about $135-140.

I'm not sure exactly how reliable recent WD's are, but I haven't heard any complaints about them. In fact, the last time Monarch had a deal on the 400GB for $186, I was really tempted to jump on it since I wanted more space for HDTV capture. I wouldn't hesitate to purchase WD, personally. 🙂

I just pulled the trigger on the 320gb. Looks to be a pretty good deal at $0.39/gb shipped. FYI, this is an OEM drive, so no cables are included.

Thanks OP!

Worth the money, IMO. Quick question, though: Is the Caviar supposed to be WD's low-end lineup or something? Why's it so inexpensive?

I wonder if this applies to the 400GB as well? I was kicking myself the last time I missed out on this deal, but now I'm not sure which I want to buy (or if I even want to buy now and not wait)...😛

The price on the 400GB is quite nice. $30 cheaper than what's listed on Froogle.

I bought two of the 320s from Monarch back in July. They've been great!

Price is decent but if you dont need right now... the speed is "only" 150MB. The new Sata II or NCQ are rated at 300MB. (admittedly there is no agreed SATA II spec as has been mentioned on this board but the 300MB speed is what I am referring to when I refer to SATA II)

My guess is that these will drop precipitously when more of the faster models come out.

Those are only theoretical numbers...and until the drives start spinning faster than 7200 RPM you won't see much (if any) difference going from IDE to SATA to SATA II.

How much of a difference does the 16mb cache vs. the 8mb cache make? Is it worth the extra $50 for the 80gb and the extra cache?

AMAZING price on that 400GB drive.

Just a note and not a threadcrap, I've had (3) WD3200JD's crap out on me since June. Those are pretty bad odds since I've only purchased 6 since then total. I don't have very high expectations for the other ones, but at least when they die, they don't DIE, they just slow down, give you CRC errors, BSOD's, etc...giving you some time to get your pr0n off.

I've read at SR forums (storagereview.com) of MANY people with simular issues. I sense a recall very soon, sounds like a controller error because many people swap electronics and solve the problem.

I am buying two for my future PC, but I think this one has no NCQ and comes with 3 year warranty, but at Monarch there are the WD400YR which is listed at 199$ and has NCQ and comes with 5 year warranty so I will be buying the YR version.

Be careful with Monarch's shipping of HD's. They only protect the top and bottom so the drive slides from side to side in the box. Piss poor.
