Hot Water - Apartments

What kind of system do they have there?

I will be sharing a bathroom with someone soon and we'll probably be taking showers back-to-back. What are the chances that I will be stuck with a cold shower?

I haven't signed the lease yet, I have until Monday. This is a big deciding factor for me.

Depends on the apartment. Ask them.

Not all houses have the same hot water heater either.

I know this is a waste, but when I was checking out the apartment, I asked the realtor if I could turn on the shower and leave it on during the tour. She said yes, and knew I was concerned about the hot water capacity. I left it on for 30 minutes straight on full blast hot/scalding water. After 30 minutes as I was leaving, I turned it off and it was still burning hot.

No problems since.

Definitely depends on the apartment. In my apartment, the hot water will get really hot when you turn it on, and then get colder after 10 seconds, and then get warmer again. It stays warm for a while.

Another important thing is water temp. If you have access to the heater, increasing the set temperature is usually an easy task of removing a cover and turning a marked knob or screw.

The apartment I am in now has one of those tiny half-sized heaters which would provide 10-15 minutes of shower time. Increasing the water temp setting from it's previous 120 to 130 increased that time by about 10 minutes. The temp setting can go a lot higher than that but keep in mind that as you increase the temp you increase the power consumption so don't go cranking it up higher than you need.

i guess it would depend on the apartment. i don't see how anyone can give you an answer besides that.

Too much variation to even try to comment. In some places, you'll never run out of hot water, no matter how hard you try. In others, you're lucky to make it through one shower. Whether or not it's an apartment vs. house makes no difference.

A lot of times apartments have smaller capacity water heaters than houses. Just look around for the tank. Even if it is a reduced capacity one, you might still be okay depending on how long you both shower for.

my last apartment had infinite super hot water 🙂. my current apartment has its own water heater and it runs out pretty quickly.

My apartment building has a hot water loop...there is effectively infinite very hot water unless both gas and electricity go down.

Someday I want to custom-build a home. It will have - count 'em - two water heaters! 😀
