There is a Morgan hot tub at our house. We had a technician come and look at it and he said both motors are out as well as the controller board. All of this due to some idiot who actually put the hot tub in the ground (previous owners, not me). Yes, we have an 8x8x4 hole in our back yard. It filled up with water and fried everything. The top of the hot tub actually sits about 6-9 inches above the ground, if that.

Not sure of anyone involvement in fixing hot tubs but am just wondering how much it normally costs to do that.

We have home buyers insurance so this will only cost us $50, WOOHOO! Thank God for insurance. However, I have to pay to pick the hot tub up, fill the hole with dirt and move the hot tub back. I don?t mind because insurance will cover the parts and labor. The technician that is going to do it estimated around $1600 once the hot tub is on top of the ground, which insurance will cover. That for both motors, controller board, and his labor.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Ever heard of someone having to move a hot tub on top of the ground? Estimated cost? Im thinking around $900-1,000. I think I will have to rent a crane to lift it, around 12 cubic yards of dirt to fill the hole, and a bobcat to do it quickly.

BTW: He said the hot tub was a very nice ($9,000), 3-4 year old, and was definitely worth fixing. Since my wife over heard that and she loves hot tubs I am obligated :).

Update:

Found out that dirt will be ~$66 delivery for 8yds. Crane will be $165 to lift it out. $203 for Bobcat and a trailer for the weekend.

$450ish total. I was estimating ~$1200.

that's a touch over 9 cubic yards of material. 8x8x4 = 256 ft.^3
get us some pics! If your yard needs some scaping, then you can do it all at once. A crane may not be necessary. Our mini-ex can lift a grand at 5'. If you elect to go that route, use some carpet over the top of the tub, and then build a spreader out of 4x4's bolted together. that will keep you from crushing the top with the side loads.

The bob cat may be able to lift it out.
At the very worst, it can lift it as high as it can
put something under the hot tub
set it back down
adjust straps and lift again
repeat until it is out

But if you soak in the hot tub it will lessen the pain. Duh.

WTF???? is it a regualr hot tub with redwood sides that was put in the ground? If so i have no idea what that idiot was thinking. how was he going to replace a motor, Fix a leaky pipe connection??? didnt he think that the moisture in the ground would rot the wood????

I have a Sundance Optima 8 person hot tub and i would never dream of sinking it in the outside dirt or having it sunk in the house. there is no way to get to parts that do break. The only way i would have a sunken hot tub is if i had a pool with a attached hot tub that was on the same water supply and the pumps were professionally installed for maint access.

as far as what this is going to cost you i think your estimate sounds about right.

if you can post pictures of this i am very interested in seeing what you have going on.

My parents got a hot tub (Morgan). We used it all the time the first year, hardly gets used now, it's just a money pit for chemicals.

Yep, it has redwood sides etc. There are 2 submersible pumps to pump the water out, but heck it hasnt ran in probably over a year and it is REALLY moist down there. It is a massive mosquito problem since there is still "regular" water in the tub.

Damn what a moron to do that. How solid is the wood? what is it sitting on in the hole? I know the frames are made from untreated 2X4's i sure hope that the frame is not rotten and it falls apart when you try to move it.

The hot tub has only been in there about 3 years. Since we live in West Texas everything is mostly really dry even though it is pretty moist under that decking. The wood feels pretty good.

What do you mean what is that sitting in the hole? That is the controller board in black, plus the motors in pic2

Easiest thing would probably be to get it up and over and then fill the hole with concrete like it should have been in the first place. Talk to someone that delivers hot tubs and ask what they'd recommend for lifting it up. Not only the weight to worry about but you have to support it right or you could damage the whole thing.

My parents are getting a hot tub any time now but they aleady have a patio they are setting it on. We'll definitely be visint ghtm e a lot more often after that gets put in. :)

Perhaps you could simply relocate the sensative parts to a new location, like next to the fence, in a rain/water resistant box.

<-- not sure if it's possible with hot tubs.
