when I mentioned that I wanted to soak in the hot tub at 24 hour fitness, the standard response was 'Eeewwwwww'...

there is a brand new one my work (opened a few months ago) and there is an older one by our house...

are germs and bacteria gonna be that big of a problem there??? wont the chlorine/heat kill the germs? or am is everyone just paranoid?

or am i just better off filling the tub at home???

the heat is definitely not enough to kill anything but the chlorine should be able to take care of atleast some. Still I wouldn't do it

Eeewwwwww

I hate my 24 hour. It is a Super Sport too. Give me a nice dark boxing gym and some free weights.

If I want a soak I'll join a freakin' day spa.

Seriously.. you're not going to get cooties, cancer, or AIDS from just soaking in a tub of super heated water that some random hotties, fatties, and kiddies have sat in before you. Grow a pair and just enjoy it.

I'd definitely take a shower afterward, but assuming the chlorine balance is checked regularly, there is nothing to worry about.

I always wonder about the hot tubs. There is this hot tub place where they specifically advertise that the hottubs are cleaned regularly as most assume that just lounging the the water isn't the only thing going on.

I get rashes from public hot tubs. I'm sure it's due to the amount of chlorine rather than bugs. If you aren't sensitive to the chemicals and it looks clean and you can smell chlorine, it's probably safe.

Hot tubs are usually smaller and in more of a private/concealable setting. Two people (male and female.....if you're not following) can and do often engage in extracurricular activities in said hot tub.

Do you wanna soak in that?

At the one I go to the hot tub, pool, and saunas are clearly visible from the weight room (glass wall); usually there's people there but I never use it myself.
Hopefully they use tons of chlorine.

Hot tubs are huge petrie dishes, just deeper.

"Poor hot tub sanitation, whether by improper design or failure of the sanitation system, can result in disease transmission and litigation. It is recommended to have multiple sanitation systems to prevent system failure if one sanitation subsystem fails."

I thought I should get a quote before saying how unhealthy it is, so I did. Now, do yourself a favor and google it if you don't trust me...

Meh. I lived in a nice apartment complex that had a 24 hr hot tub. Used the tired pickup line of "Hey, howsabouta nice soak in the hot tub?", to a lot of victi... errr.. dates. Definitely saw some weirdos in there before, and I'm sure they were doing what I was doing... :)

Never had a problem other than dehydration from boozing, soaking, and... err.. aerobic activity! :)

If you're not squeamish about the THOUGHT of what might be in there, I seriously doubt anything will happen. (that a nice dose of penicillin wouldn't knock out, at worst) :D

I've been going to the pool/showers/locker room barefoot at the Y for years, which everyone told me not to do, and I've never caught anything. That said, I did read an amusing best of craigslist about this Y lifeguard that had to keep kicking masturbators out of the hot tub.

Agreed.

You have this thing called skin. It keeps the badies out. If one is too scared to get into a hottub then seek psychiatric help immediately.

Most gym hot-tubs reside in the gender-specific locker rooms.

Just shower before (as a courtesy to others) and afterwards (as a courtesy to yourself) and everything will be kosher. I'm a bit of a germ-a-phobe, so I only soak in my gym hot-tub on Thursday afternoons, just a few hours after they drain, clean, and refill it.
