Great Printer for photos. Uses dye sublimation technology which looks a lot better than inkjets. CompUSA 139.99- 20 (IR) - 20 (MIR) = 99.99 + tax.

Paper is a lil expensive but deals can be found (i.e. ebay). You get what you pay for. The pictures are perfect.

"Uses dye sublimation technology which looks a lot better than inkjets"

are you serious? dye sublimation walks all over any inkjet or laser, it looks like a real photogragh. when i was a student at rit i got to use their $5000 8.5" x 11" dye sub and a 13" x 13" dye sub. absolutely outrageous. i can' see how you could get the above for so cheap, but the paper must cost a lot.

you say the paper is expensive; forget ebay, how much is it? maybe i'll believe this if the paper is really expensive and get one.

I agree with artist... this sounds too good to be true... dye sublimation is incredible (at least on the printer I saw printing it just a couple of years ago, and that printer was around 5 grand. If this printer prints at the same level of quality, and the paper isn't too outrageous, this is a great deal.

$17 for 25 sheets, cheaper than polaroid. i'd have to see a demo on something that cheap, although maybe the technology and mass marketing has brought the price down.

cusa has been doing this deal for a few weeks now in their unadvertised specials. glad to see a thread on it.
the cheapest i've found is at wal-mart: 25 pack with cartridges for $15.88
one of the guys that works the photos there (@walm) has one (the sx5 that his store -- and others -- is discontinuing) and a sony cybershot: he says hp paper/canon paper all work fine :p but i'm skeptical... it's so unlike sony to make a product that will work with something else that they aren't making money off of...
the rebate goes to sony rebates in florida [i think]
maybe i'll get them to print out some examples...

In the past, all the Sony dye-sub printers have used a ribbon cartridge that is sold as a package, with the paper, supposed to be good for 25 prints. I suppose you could use another brand of paper but it comes with the "ink" anyway so it would just be costing you more. BB usually sells the consumables kit for 19.99

Here is more info and a review at Steve's Digicams

Steve's Digicams

You can print directly from the printer from a Sony Memory stick (or Flash media with optional adapters) . No PC needed.

SVM-25LS is the 25 pack of 4x6 paper w/ribbon

It is only $16.95 directly from Sony Sony paper

Available here for:
Single Box $14.99
5 box package $61.99 (only $12.40 per box)

Plenty of Ebayers are selling it for around $12 a pack for 5 packs.

I didn't check shipping, reseller ratings, tax etc during this quick search. I just wanted to price out the consumables to see if it was worth it to stop the wifely nagging that I will never ever print out the digital pictures I take of my twin 1-1/2 year old girls. They are damn cute, though, so I think I will be going to CompUSA tonight!

The cost per page seems kinda high, about 68 cents compared to .25 - .52 cents for inkjets but then again I'm guessing the big difference in price is due to the quality difference. I just don't know if the quality difference is worth it, what do you guys think?

The worth of it is really up to the user. Personally I think its worth it. I've printed some of my pictures out and they are incredible. Cant tell the difference between these prints and the ones you get from the photomarts. Your call, I'm just putting the info out there for those who dont know. Have fun...

The reason this is so cheap is because it is a last years model. It is still 'current' but it was released last year. Very good printer, but not really photo quality at all. All of sony's dye-subs print at 403dpi...which is reallllllly low. That makes their max output 3.8 megapixels at the largest print size of 4x6". It even says so on the box of the unit. I sold quite a few of these, it prints out the CYMG pictures from a ribbon onto the special paper, and then laminates it with either a glossy or textured finish (not quite matte). It is VERY impressive for the price, however keep in mind it will downsample any pictures larger than 3.8 megapixels. I print from the EX-55 every day, which has identical output as this unit, which i used to print from last year as well. Lots of pixelization, however 99% of people won't care. If you hold it up to a real 4x6, you can tell that the quality is worse, remember 403 dpi isnt all that great. The way it melts the ink to the paper makes it kinda blur a bit, which results in a smoother picture, which is kinda cool, but if i print from any of my cameras (Olympus C-5050, Canon EOS-10D) it will result in jaggies that don't occur when i print from my canon i950. Also, you can only print 4x6. One of the biggest advantages of these dye-sub printers is that the final coat after the CYMG is the clearcoat laminate, which results in the ink never smearing, and lasting ~100 years. If you want simple, 90 second 4x6 or wallet photos that will last a life time, this is the printer for you. Best Buy sells the cartridges/paper for for 16.99 off the shelf. If you want 5x7, 8x10, photo-realistic photos, go with a photo ink-jet from Epson, HP, or Canon. My preference is the old S900 or i950, but to each their own.

For 99$ ar this is certainly a steal, considering the EX-55 costs 199$ now, and the SV55 used to cost about $400 a year ago.

the dpi on dye sub isn't relevant like it is on inkjets. i used a 300 dpi machine and was blown away by the results. the last time i looked that machine was over $5,000.00 and has been selling at that price for years.

if you used 300 dpi on an inkjet it would look terrible. by the way, as far as photo printers go, canon walks all over the hp and epson. i have an i850 and it's great.

That's true about the dpi, its because the output kinda fuzzes together. However, I printed from this printer about 15 cartridges worth varying from 1mp to 5mp, and the new EX55, which is identical output from 3mp to 6mp, and there's noticable jaggies because of the lower resolution. I bet the olympus would fare better, and it can do 8x10.

My friend prints off a dye sub Olympus printer... they used to go for over $1k about 2 years ago... i think now they dropped down to about $400.

The photos are definitely great and so sharp... I forgot how much the cost per page was for him, but it look like a regular printer without these cartridges.

Just a data point for anyone interested: In Consumer Reports this month, the i850 is ranked as number four after Canon S520, Canon S530D, and HP 995c.

I have the Olympus P-400 and it's a great printer... great, clear images up to 8x10". I does justice to my Nikon D100.

Paper is $80 for 100 sheets... ribbons are $40 (good for 50 sheets), so you're in for $1.60 per page (that's full retail... there are some cheaper sources around).

Since you can get 3 4x6 images per page, that $.53 per image... much cheaper than the Sony, so depending on the number of prints you make (and your desire to larger images per page... either 1 8x10 or 2 5x7's per page), it may be a better choice...

They are currently running about $400.

I tend to disbelieve a lot of what consumer reports says, remember when they test stuff, in general they test it for about a day or two, better to get real reviews from other useres. I'd take an i850 over anoy of those other ones any day...speed and 2picoliter drops....niice

Cheap sh!tty dye-subs don't have the color gamut of inkjets.

That Sony is a POS. I wouldn't buy a dye-sub unless I had $2000 eating a hole in my pocket. For anything less than a grand, you're better off with a good inkjet. Period.
