Hot?Picked up Sony 21" CDP G500 at ubid for $456,refurbed by Sony, only 90day warranty by Sony but I'm using 17" trinitron refurb I picked up 3 years ago and no problems.I thought this was good considering the same thing is going for about $650 to $700 at e-bay and they can be had for around $800 new.

Unfortunately, you purchased from ubid. Good luck if you ever have problems with the monitor.

Good luck with yours, and may it last a long time, but 90 days is too short a warranty for just about anything, let alone an expensive, complicated, piece of electronic equipment. One year should be minimum.

The key is to find out if the warranty is via ubid or Sony. If it is direct via Sony, its a decent deal. A friend of mine has a 21" Sony refurb. Its about a year old, works great.

Well I can understand how people would be doubtful of ubid (heck it is justified), but after a friend picked one of these up (and with a little convincing by MADCAP from this board), I got myself one of these puppies. These things are in excellent shape, I really couldn't tell it was refurbished except for the sticker on the box. Comes direct from Sony packed very nicely and I guess I was lucky (as it seems to be a crapshoot with Sony monitors new or refurbished) that mine had no conv or geometry problems. If you want one of these and can't afford the retail prices check this out, I am very happy with mine. There is an option for a 1 or 2 year warranty for around $60. The 90 day warranty that comes standard is direct from Sony.

Don't forget the shipping cost, it usually costs you more than $80 for a 21" monitor.

yeah... i got one. the box was in perfect condition... but inside the monitor seemed to have been dropped on a corner, cracking open the plasic case and shattering the corner support. so i'm sending it back to ubid. the monitor was so dope, i went and bid on another, great price for an unbeatable monitor. so, hopefully i'll be getting a 'good' one this time... if i don't... screw ubid.

When I left Sony in Dec of '99, there were major issues with Ubid. To the point that we were asking people to fax their receipts in and the management would get back to them. As far I understood it, we weren't accepting UBid PoPs (I never had to resolve a UBid issue). I would suggest calling Sony's tech support and getting confirmation on the warranty support status for UBid sold products.

The cheapest shipping for a monitors on Ubid costs $7.99 + 0.99/LBS. Talk about a rip-off; that's $86 to $96 for a 21" monitor. My 60 lbs monitor was shipped for around $25.

Yeah, it blows. I actually am using a one of these from ubid actually. You know what? For 600 shipped it was worth every penny (that was including a one year extended warranty). Hopefully this thing will go for at least two years :).

Wow a G500 for $450? I bought mine for $1,050 last year.

I'll bet 3 of those refurbs are probably ones I sent back because of the problems I had with them though.

Good luck.

First monitor had defective memory settings. The monitor would reset to its factory settings everytime the power was turned off. I would have to resize the monitor everytime I turned it on.

The 2nd and 3rd monitors had bad geometry and convergence problems. I did not pay $1050 to get lousy geometry and convergence so I returned them and got slightly better ones.

I bought a Sony refurbished monitor two years ago ... still has a beautiful display after heavy use.
Sony refurbs are decent from my experience.

Most of the useful articles and user opinions I've read on this monitor state Sony is inconsistent with the quality of these monitors. The problems tend to be limited to geometric distortion, brightness, and fuzzy image quality (although I believe some of this is due to video card usage).

A 0.24mm dot pitch on an aperture grille isn't directly comparable to a shadow mask. For example 0.22mm stripe pitch on an aperture grille will have 0.22mm horizontal while only a 0.44mm vertical. A 0.24mm pitch would probably be equivalent to a 0.28mm shadow mask, resolution wise. Meaning, at high resolutions, text won?t look to great, but games should look fine. Here's an old ZDNet article on pitch that should make all of this clear.

The monitor is "Virtually-flat", as stated by Sony' website. This is an allusion to the slight cylindrical curvature of the monitor--vertically flat, but not horizontally flat. This shouldn?t be noticeable, unless you use your monitor for a mirror.

I hope this helps.

What do you mean by Virtually Flat?

The G500 screen is completely flat. There is no bend or curve to the monitor. It is FLAT FLAT.

As for the reviews, I wrote one of the first ones there hehe.
