I know the Vaio P series is pretty dates, and not all that powerful, but $399 for one of these with a 64GB SSD is a great deal IMHO. Plus they have black, green, white, and red available. In for a red.

They must have caught wind of their mistake perhaps? All links are now dead to the individual laptops.

Its only 1.33 ghz. My dell mini is a dual core 1.6 ghz, and that was only $300 2 years (I think) ago. Why would a slower CPU with roughly the same size screen be more expensive 2 years later? Is the 1.33ghz cpu that much faster clock for clock? The SSD would at least help with battery life tho.

what size SSD and/or memory? Those can be a big factor.

Also, please show me where you got a dual core dell mini for $300

There's only one left at that price the Crystal White one for $399. 1600x768 on that 8" wide screen must be a pain. None the less, a really nice system and a fair price.

Well, I couldn't resist, had to pick one up to try. I wasn't about to spend the $900+, but this price is reasonable. Seems like one of those odd products that could shake out to be really cool, or disappointingly mediocre.

8.0" 1600 x 768 LED-backlit TFT
1.33Ghz Intel Atom Z520
2GB DDR2
64GB SSD
Pointing nipple (no touchpad on this generation)
802.11b/g/n wireless
Bluetooth 2.1+EDR
Webcam
Verizon Wireless broadband
GPS
Media card reader
Up to 4 hour battery (probably 2.5-3 hour real)
1.4 lb weight
9.7" x 4.8" x 0.8"

I love the idea of a high resolution panel (can always just scale up text), though with such a weak processor and Intel GMA500, it'll probably be extremely slow. Will probably need to overclock it using SetFSB.

It's quite a bit lighter than the netbook I'm using now (Dell Mini 10v), and dimensionally smaller as well. The instant-on functionality (linux) for internet usage seems useful.

If the processor in your netbook is an Atom, I have doubts that it is dual core. According to this: http://www.anandtech.com/show/3882/intel-atom-n550-netbooks
they are just starting to use dual core atoms in netbooks, excepting a few unusual models Asus put out
Also, this has an SSD, which could easily account for the extra $99

Well, they don't make computers this small. The keyboard is typeable with medium-large hands; I'm typing on one now. It's way lighter than the competition. I has an awesome screen (1600 resolution horizontal). Yes, you can scale text on most web pages, so small is *good*. We mostly use it as a travel computer, but for that, it really can't be beaten.

The linux support for this isn't quite there out of the box (at least for the graphics driver) but it is available, and recently has gotten pretty snappy. Red Hat/Fedora may have better integrated support for this notebook than Ubuntu. For ubuntu, you have to add a foreign repository and add in the drivers and build a kernel module for the driver, but it's not hard; there is a long thread about it on the Ubuntu forums.
