These are a lot of fun, if your case and MB will allow it to fit.

Maybe you've seen this: for a substantial performance increase, rather than fool with the *$%@#!! fan clips, use two 120mm fans and a couple of rubber bands to "sandwich" the unit in a 'push-pull' fan arrangement. The rubber bands last for years, easy to install, and you can arrange the fans in whatever orientation fits best on your system. Hook both fans up to the MB headers and use the 'fan control' utility to give separate, progressive rpm increases with temperature, from near-silent to full-blast.

Speaking for myself, quiet is the goal. I've been using an AC Freezer7 for ages, and while it keeps my E6600 cool at 3.4 GHz, it's not quiet. I see many users of the big Scythe coolers saying that a second fan only yields ~2*C improvement.

The Scythe Andy Samurai Master is $28.99 on Newegg. I've used one. Its a solid performer and is very quiet.

Or if you're looking for more of the "tower" style of cooler, the Sunbeam CR-CCTF currently has a $10 rebate on it making it $29.99 shipped. Its supposed to be a good performer as well

I'm using a Scythe Infinity right now. I run it passively with a 120mm rear exhaust case fan.

This type of HS design is great but it does have its downsides (size/weight)

How do these compare to the Thermalright 120?

I need a better cooler than the stock one for my X4 920 and was thiking about picking up the Thremalright, but it looks like the Sunbeam might be a better deal as long as it can keep up under overclocking/overvolting conditions.

Edit: Looks like the Sunbeam Core Contact Freezer is a winner!

The Scythe Mugen 2 is great. Installation is tedious but the cooler works well and is fairly quiet. Even though there are few reviews, some show better than Xigmatek S1283, and the others show the Scythe slightly behind. I did see a review comparing to the TRUE. The Scythe was only a couple degrees behind. I am running a Q9550 @ 3.8Ghz, load temps hit about 62-65 degrees on full load with Intel Burn test. For the money it is hard to beat this cooler.

My latest build uses a Scythe Mugen 2 while my previous one used a TRUE-120. Thermalright coolers have quality control issues that made me veer away from them. Before switching to the Scythe, I tried a Thermalright XP-120 and it wasn't making good contact with the CPU heatspreader at all...CPU temps were off the charts.

The Mugen 2's mounting system is very convoluted and tedious, but it makes for good contact, and the bottom surface of the cooler is polished to a mirrored finish. At $36, it's the best deal of all the high-end CPU heatsinks out there.
