I got this a few minutes ago for $99 plus tax. I have bought Pine products before and haven't had any problems. I went ahead and bought the extended service for $4, it extends it a year and also 90 day money back guarantee along with other features. This could be an Aopen Drive, not really sure. Anyone know? It has Justlink capabilities.... burnproof.:)

Is there something wrong with the drive? I would have ordered one but I really need one now. Do you have any experience with it or a review link?

Well pine isn't known for quallity thats for sure.. That drive may be just as good as a plextor, I have no idea.
The Lite-On I do know is a great drive.

Also, you won't have to pay tax if your shopping online. So that $99 drive is actually closer to $108 isn't it?

I to bought the Pine CDRW-24X10X40 (Amazon Deal) and it is in fact an AOpen drive (I also looked in a box at Sam's Club and they are AOpens). I also have a Lite-On 24X10X40 in another rig (my wife's, which is right beside mine) and I can give you an honest comparison.

1. The Aopen is quieter
2. The AOpen reads back CD-RWs faster
3. I can burn just about anything @ 24X with JustSpeed off (not JustLink, they do different things) and have zero errors with the new v2.02 firmware (yours probably has v1.0, v2.0 was better and v2.02 is really good).
4. The AOpen seems to built a little better

Mine works great with Nero v5.5.5.1 and Norton Ghost, the firware upgrade is a breeze and afterward every program sees it as an AOpen.

I'm not trashing the Lite-On, it's a good drive, but give the AOpen a try, you might like it.

Later...

I have to side with the Lite-On drive, I have a 12x and it is a great drive. If you order from NewEgg, you will not pay sales tax except in CA, and they ship FAST. I live in NC and if I order Monday morning, I have my package by Wednesday afternoon. Plus they keep you informed ALL the way through shipping, with their 5 step process. I like that.

I have never read a kind review of a Pine drive, which isn't to say you haven't had good luck, but you are one of the few. It used to be everytime someone posted a Lite-On deal, everyone would reply "Buy a Plextor" and "Lite-On sucks", but I haven't seen that in quite some time. My guess is that enough people actually bought the drive and decided it was a good deal. Plus you don't have to wait for a rebate like the Plextors. The Plextor is a nice product, and so is a Porsche Boxter, but I can't afford either so I bought a Lite-On and would recommend it to anyone.

I found this drive is AOpen CDRW2440. It is reviewed here. I looks like I may have got a really good deal after all. I found a post by someone who has 2 systems basically the same as mine and has both the Lite On and the Pine and the Pine out performs the Lite On. I know this may not be true but I'm willing to give it a try. It also comes with Nero.

I also have both, the Lite-On and the Pine. The only thing and I mean only thing the Lite-On does better is that it reads and writes SD2 disks perfectly. I love both of them. And what is this "not known for quality"? I have gotten Hitachis DVDRoms amongst other things packed in a Pine box. Top notch stuff is in there. Oh, and the Plextor...24x...it can't do SD2 either. ;)

Note that they also use different flavors of the same "anti-coaster" technology. Lite-On uses BURN-PROOF, and the Pine uses Justlink, which is just as good but is different.

<< Do your self a favor and bring it right back.
Then surf over to www.newegg.com and order the lite-on 24x drive for $80. $4 fedex shipping, and it comes with nero.

Linky poo

Oh and shipping is $5 my bad.

Thanks. My stepbrother entrusted me to get him a CD-RW and handed me a $100 bill. This fits perfectly.

I'm not quite sure what you're saying here... but rebadging is quite common, especially in the burner area. There are tons of rebadged Lite-ons out there for sale by various companies.

The Lite-On 24x10x40 does NOT use Burn Proof. They have designed their own "No Coaster" technology. That way they no longer have to pay Sanyo for the rights to use their original copyrighted Burn Proof.

Somebody earlier said that Pine wasn't know for quality but that Lite On was. Wlll I found where Pine in the past would readge Lite On drives and resale them as Pine. I know this is pretty common but what I thought was funny was the person said Pine wasn't know for quality but yet they were rebadged Lite On drives. I burned 12 disk last night all were generic disk. All burned at 24X and I had no coasters. They were burning between 4 to 7 minutes depending on how much data on disk. No problems. I also flashed the drive and now it's a AOpen CRW2440. More than satisfied, plus I didn't have to wait. If you have time to wait then of course the Lite On is the better deal but I wanted and I got...lol. I'm not a patient person.

Sounds like you are statisfied Dejoker, which is the main point as you detailed your experience with this drive before anyone else spent their money on it. And you point about re-badging is well taken, and a valid argument. Since most of these drives also work in a Mac, I believe the manufacturers have been forced to build a better drive just to compete in the marketplace, and hence we get a better product.

I really haven't heard of a "Crap" drive in awhile, and I think most of that feedback might have been from people buying old hardware at blowout prices. And it's always the drive's fault, not shoddy ASPI drivers that have been corrupted by installing 5 different burning programs to get that Warez disc to work.

If you are as pleased with your drive as I have been with my Creative (re-badged Lite-On) then you will be very happy indeed.
