REI online and B&M stores have great sales going on from today Aug 25 thru Labor Day. Prices are marked down and items ending with .83 have additional 50% off. So whatever price you see online for '.83' will be same in your local REI store.

I picked up Keen Boston shoes, original price $95, reduced price $59.83, final price (incl tax) ~$32 after 50% off.

If you are looking for winter coats (sporty type), I saw they were on sale too! Since, I am not into Winter coats (being in TX), I don't know exact prices and discounts.
 
online isn't so great, not that much selection, and what is available either A: isn't that great, or B: has very limmited selection (ie most likely not in your size)

Really hot if you can find what you need (might have better luck if you're lucky enough to live near a store)

If you haven't yet, you should check this out. I got a nice pair of shorts and three shirts for $40 w/ tax. Most of it is this brand called prana, who I haven't heard of before, but it seemed pretty well made (and probably is if REI sells it). Definitely worth checking out.
 
Hmmm. I get off the subway directly across from an REI, I think I'll have to check this out tonight or tomorrow. Thanks op, this might be pretty cool and if there's nothing for me, it's not like I'll be going out of my way.
 
I've gotten a few things from the sales...pretty good prices, but remember anything on sale you dont get member savings on
