Sounds like old technology. From 2002? You'd probably find the same technology in an Apex these days..... no?

Actually, no...players from 1-2 years ago with the Faroudja chip are better than current players w/o the chip.

Take Panasonic for example. Most of their DVD players from 2 years ago (w/ Faroudja chip) outperform their current line of DVD players (w/o chip). It's the chip that matters.

I almost ordered it but changed my mind when I saw Pricegrabber listing some places selling the same model (one w/ AT at the end of the model #). The cheapest is $198 shipped (new, I believe).

No way, if you ever own an Apex and have open it to play with it, you can tell they use the least amount of possible components, so there is no way they can rival this high-end level functionality.

The DCDi technology's effect look a lot like the gamma blending anti-aliasing of the R300. Probably more advanced in effect since it is only dealing with constant stream of interpolating data instead of rendered pixel data.

Like this one that sold for $86 or this one that sold for $114? Oh, maybe you mean these brand new ones that don't sell for $175. I guess there's no reason to mention the 3 that sold for $47-$56 due to a missing remote.

gwai-lo? chi sin! hahahaha

What you meant to say is "they're just SD." If it's not HDTV, who cares?!

Can anyone tell me a good DVD player for MP3 DVD+Rs, with good navigation features? (e.g., a player that shows more of long filenames)

I would take any dvd player with a silicon image pure progressive chip over a Faroudja chip anyday. Look into buying a Denon, It will outpeform that anyday anyday.

How is this player when it comes to playing VCD/SVCD/XVCD/DVD-R/DVD+R/ etc ? I got mixed reaction at dvdrhelp.com

Anyone own this player and have success with DVD-R and DVD+R in particular?

Personally i was looking for an XP30 from Panasonic.. which plays pretty much anything you throw in it :)

The chip is this dvd player is the old version, there are only a couple dvd player out with the newest version of the chip. (samsung, denon....)

My reccomendation for dvd player in this price range would be the The Samsung DVD-HD931 you can buy it for $300 new or $200 on ebay, and it has the newest Faraoudjai Chip FLI2310 (same one found in $2000 top of the line denon) and a dvi-d - output.

Manufactures Website

Another good dvd player with DVI out is the Vinc Bravo D1 it has a $199 MSRP

Review of V Inc Bravo D1

There are no advantages to having a DVI enabled player, and both the Bravo and the Samsung are known to have problems on DVI.

I would be on the lookup for a Panasonic XP30, but they are going for $300 on ebay now..sigh.

well no advantages unless, i dunno, you want a complete digital bath with no analog conversions.. I have the Samsung DVD-HD931 (FLI2310 Chip) hooked up to my panasonic 42" HDTV Plasma via dvi and my denon dvd-3800 (silicon image SiI504 Chip) hooked up to my HDTV trinitron. Both look great, though the dvi looks better. The audio is better on the denon though thanks to the AL24 proccessing and the Burr-Brown D/A converters

However there are only advantages with the dvi if you have it hooked up to a fixed resolution HDTV aka Plasma or LCD TV

All digital path is good in theory, however, both the Bravo and Samsung have well known problems through DVI, especially the IRE level on the samsung.

I have a Sony LCD and prefer component inputs over what is on the market today for DVI.

Well the use of DVI versus component video might depend on the user preference, but the fact is that the Samsung uses the newest version of the Faroudja Chip (FLI2310) unlike the Panasonic XP30/XP50 RP-62/RP82 which use the older (FLI2200) Chip making it a very good choice for those in the market for a dvd player

So if you want the newest technology the panasonic HD931 can be had for a cheap price ($200) , though the others based on the older chip are highly regarded and are great dvd players as well

can I ask where your basing this statement from?
just check this out, the silicon image is getting owned if you ask me... The newer chipsets may be better, and I haven't seen any newer extensive test out yet, please do post a link to one if you know of any...

I guess i misspoke there, I am very happy with my denon-3800 which uses the Silicon Image SI-504 Chip. I prefer denon because they have better build quality and sound quality then many of the other dvd player in that review.

I am also very happy with the video on my Samsung DVD- HD931, i use my denon mostly becuase of its audiophile sound. (this is why i said i like the silicon image overall unit over the faraoudja overall unit, sorry for the confusion)

I would go with the new faraodja chip in a second if i could afford the new denon DVD-5900 which uses FLI-2310 chip and has audiophile sound ($2000 MSRP)

I don't know what im saying, but if if you want a good budget dvd player with great video i would get the samsung HD931. I have heard good things about the new FLI-2310 / FLI 2301chip. So if you want nice video i would get that.

"SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 21, 2002--Genesis Microchip Inc. (Nasdaq:GNSS), the leading provider of display image processors, today announced that Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a global leader in the consumer electronics industry, selected Genesis' FLI2301 video deinterlacer for use in its DVD-HD1000 models.
"After evaluating Genesis' next generation of video deinterlacer chip, we were extremely pleased with its features, performance and image quality," said Y.S. Park, Samsung's vice president of DVD Research and Development Group. "We believe that incorporating the FLI2301 into our DVD-HD1000 models gives the consumer the highest quality of DVD player available."
The FLI2301 is part of the FLI2300 family of next-generation deinterlacer chips from Genesis using Emmy-award winning technology from Faroudja(TM). The previously available FLI2200 featured many of Faroudja's patented technologies, including Film Mode (reverse 3:2 pulldown) detection, Cross Color Suppression and the highly acclaimed Directional Correlational Deinterlacing (DCDi(TM)). To this, the FLI2300 family adds 3-D noise reduction, horizontal and vertical scaling for aspect ratio conversion, and Faroudja's patented TrueLife(TM) video enhancement technology.
"Samsung's commitment to quality and innovation makes the selection of our FLI2301 a natural choice," said Anders Frisk, senior vice president of marketing for Genesis Microchip. "DVD players using our technology, such as Samsung's DVD-HD1000, provide the highest image quality in the market today."
Samsung's DVD-HD1000 model uses a 480i source in the DVD and outputs 720p/1080i quality at the HDTV level, making the quality of the output more vivid than the source. The DVD-HD1000 also offers premium audio performance, using the noise filter and most advanced DAC and power isolation modules. More information on this model can be found at http://samsungelectronics.com/dvdp/pro_end_dvd/index.html. Look for this DVD player and others proudly displaying the DCDi(TM) by Faroudja logo. For more information on DCDi technology, please visit www.dcdi-video.com."

I've owned this player for a couple of years now, and though I only have it hooked it up to a SD display w/o progressive scan (and thus not taking advantage of the Faroujda chip), I think it sucks.

Menus suck. It's hard to navigate, or to figure out where you are. Completely unintuitive.

Ffwd/rew sucks. Good luck trying to rewind a few seconds to replay that last clip! You'll end up five minutes back, and then you'll forward seven minutes foward, and five back, and seven forward... etc.

Remote sucks. I can't tell you how many times I've hit the chapter foward instead of the fast foward button.

Display sucks. They have a small, square dot-matrix display on the front, but it doesn't really tell you any useful info.

Firmware sucks. They were releasing new firmware every few months... each one introduced as many new bugs as it fixed.

I'd really like to get a dvd player with a UI as good as my Tivo. I guess if I want to spend a bundle, I can get one of those slick Tivo DVD records. Mmmmmmm....

Lemme add a few things as I just got this on a whim.

1. It plays my crappy, el cheapo DVD-R and DVD+R movies fine. I only have a few, but no problems.
2. I love that it plays mp3's, this is new to me and almost worth it buy itself:)
3. Yes the navigation and display features suck. Really suck. Doesn't bother me much.
4. The remote isn't a universal like my old Proscan, I don't really have a problem with it, the nav arrows are close to the chapter forward back buttons so there is occasional confusion, but it doesn't seem as big a problem for me.
5. I won't be getting a new TV until I move into my new place in a few months so I'm not taking advantage of the Progressive scan, which is the reason I bought this.

Overall I have to reserve judgement. I have faith in the fact that for 150 I have a quality progressive scan player that will take advantage of a new HD set soon. My old Proscan is a better unit. It is better quality and on a regular set gives a better image and playback IMO, and of course is vastly better in the UI and other features. But it doesn't do Progressive scan and doesn't play mp3's.

So... As much as I love my 7 year old Proscan (go DiVx) that has served me well for over 2 years (got my $70 bucks worth on ebay) its going to mom's house to bring her into this century.

peace.
