<< Think about it. The CPU and motherboard is so much more powerful and comprehensive (as far as technology is concerned), and yet most good setups cost less than 200 dollars. I think video card manufacturers are ripping people off blind. >>
Um no, maybe YOU should think about it. CPUs designs last for several years, only they're 'tweaked' every so often to offer better mhz. Mobos aren't exactly the most complicated things... all the designers have to do is slap together the chipsets and make sure thigns work (ok, it's not exactly that easy, but that's the gist of it). They're also sold in MUCH greater quantity than vid cards are, so they can afford to have a smaller profit margin. Vid cards are also progressing at a faster rate than CPUs and mobos are, and although a design may last a generation or two, they're pretty much re-engineered every couple of years.
$250 for a vid card isn't asking too much for a top performance card. Hell, a leather jacket cost about the same as a vid card, and the leather jacket doesn't have the overhead of a team of engineers, technical support staff, software/drivers engineers, and a silicon fabrication plant, and whatever unknown overhead that might be involved in the design, manufactuering, and distribution of a vid card.
Their profit margins aren't exaclty the most lucrative either. In the last couple of years, we've seen Hercules go bellyup (they're still around because Guillemot bought them) and Diamond getting out of the vid card business.
