Probably the most highly reviewed R9 380 on the market and one of the few with 4GBs of RAM. Already a sick deal at $179.99. On top of the MIR there's also the Visa Checkout discount as well as a NewEgg Mobile 5% coupon floating around.

Would this be an overkill upgrade for an AMD Phenom II X4 955?

Currently running with an AMD Radeon HD 5700. I'm also looking at the PowerCooler R9 270 that is on sale...

I wouldn't get more than either of those cards or a 960, gpu power wise.

In a way, yes, but you would probably double your frame rate. I had a PIIx4 @ 3.5ghz and went from a 5770 to a 7850 (270 is a 7870) and doubled my frame rate in most games. The 270 is about the highest card I'd pair with a Phenom II. The 280 4gb would be overkill IMO.
