The phone is on clearance at B&M Staples stores. The web shows $59.98.

Price: $23.50 - Rebate #1($20.00) - Rebate #2($10.00) = -$6.50 - any tax/stamps

My staples (Woburn, MA) had about 8 of these this afternoon. They were not right under the phone, they were across the aisle. Ask someone to look for it if you don't see it. The price said something like $41 on the shelf tag, but it will ring up $23.50. This are Staples rebates, so we know they are fast at getting them back. The rebates will printout at the register. Rebate offers end 12/31/02.

Edit: There are two rebates on the web, but the $10 is expired. The $10 one from the register is still valid until 12/31/02. This is why it is B&M unless they put up the new $10 rebate on the web.

***Credit given to plush wallet.

I said earlier that the $10 on the web is not valid but the one that prints at the register is.

Ya, the phone is okay but it is worth the battery and caller id. Never hurts to have another phone around either. You might be able to combine this with other things and use the 30 off 100 coupons out there.

I got in on this deal- and was going to go in for another to make another easy $6.50.

One problem- both rebate slips expect the 'original' UPC code from the box- the box only has one UPC.

I'm going to copy the UPC and send the copy in for the lesser rebate- worst case scenario the phone cost me $5.

This is probably a super-craptacular phone like the Southwestern Bell et. all phones. Hell, even the Semiens 2.4ghs phone I got for ~$8 after rebate bites, and it's SEMIENS! I'm sticking with Uniden and Panasonic :)

BUT this is a damn cheap phone if anyone just needs something that works!

DO NOT BUY THIS PHONE UNLESS YOU JUST WANT THE FREE MONEY.

I bought this phone, and it's only useable for about 2 minutes, the battery does not hold charge, and the static will take over within minutes of talk time.

Worthless.

Thanks for the warning but I don't intend on using this phone. I've had my trusty Panasonic 900MHz dual keypad cordless for years and will keep using it until it kicks the bucket.

Panasonic looks like a good product, but not Uniden. It's only so-so. Try Sony, in addition to the Panasonic. My dual-keypad Sonys are 900 mHz, but they are very strong and reliable. They just work well. And battery pack is one of those that is essentially three AA cells. The original battery was like 600 mAh at 3.6 volts (NiCD). But I found some MAHAs on the web that had end tabs, for soldering together, and created a couple 1800 mAh battery packs with my soldering iron and the old wires. Then I found some blue heat-shrink tubing that was about three inches wide and used a short piece to wrap the battery pack. Cool! Lasts forever!

No, Sony cordless phones have one very bad trait - lack of volume. I have a Sony phone that's been working reliably for years, but we hate to use it because we can never hear the person on the other
end.

We replaced it as our main phone with a Uniden. It's been working very well. Only complaint is that
it doesn't always make good electrical contact when you place it in the charging cradle.

Allright I just picked this phone up, and i still I have to wait 12 hours for it to charge to try it. Despite all the bad press, I'm holding out some hope that it wont suck, so far the documentation of the product and the packaging all look top notch, and also I noticed that the IBM phones at Staples were actually just rebadged phonemates.... so who knows...maybe it wont suck.

seriously...this manual is better than manuals that came with my last several namebrand component purchases.... thick, high quality glossy paper, all in English and only English without a hint of Chinglish to be found....complete warranty and contact info....none of that "ISO 9002" crap which is *supposed* to indicate that a product passed a certain level of quality assurance, but is in fact just something that generic crappy manufacturers slap all over their sweatshop components to try and make them look legitimate (instead of plastering their products with their company name brand or contact info like a *real* company would).
But alas I digress: so yay documention!

This phone has a bunch of reviews in Amazon. Look for IBM 3455. It looks as though this phone is newer than the IBM 3455. Most of the non-existent features mentioned in several reviews, are, in fact, available, such as AutoAnswer and Editing of Phone Book. There was also a review how a user was able to solve the reception quality problems. In fact the manual recommends a certain care in choosing its location to avoid these problems.

Just last night, I was about 8-10 from the base in the same room, and I was having problems being heard.

FWIW, still a bunch of these to be found in North Jersey (as well as the Compaq FS740 monitors).......

Thanks for the heads up, optoman. Might have to run to closest Staples tonight and see if they have any just to make a few bucks, then pawn it off to some poor soul.

Hmm, garsh, we have had this phone for over two years, and still works like a charm. WONDERFUL reception, and have never had problems with hearing anyone on it. Wouldn't have had to buy this one if we hadn't left the first one out in the rain.

IBM 3455 at Amazon - looks like the same model.

Here is one reviewer's opinion;

We've had this phone for about six months now. I dread using it. I'll walk clear across the house to pick up another phone even if this phone is directly in front of me. Clarity on this phone is non-existent. If I am forced to use this phone, I can barely hear the caller, even on the highest volume setting; I always end up screaming at the caller to speak up, then they hang up on me. I have the same problems every time I use this phone. I HATE IT.

Sounds like this guy does not know when to quit.

On the other side of the coin, when my sister-in-law worked at the Sony's main office in NYC and got her discount at the employee store, she said the only Sony item that NONE of the employees would buy was the phones. The phones had a terrible in-house reputation......
