How can you tell it's the gold version instead of silver? I don't see it mention anything about encryption supported. I need a gold card cos my school only supports 128bit encryption. Thanks!

Any suggestions for a router that will work well with these? I'm new to wireless networking and mixing brands worries me...

The Dell Truemobile 1150s are made by Agere Systems (Lucent/Orinoco spinoff) and has 128 Bit WEP RC4, and best of all, 13 Channels since they're for the global market :) (note: Channels 12 & 13 illegal for use in US per FCC regulations). There is a Lucent MC connector on the card to connect to an external antenna.

These cards works fine w/ my DLink DI-711 (from another AT/amazon deal) and the range kicks butt.
Just make sure to download newer drivers from Dell, since the ones on the CDROM is outdated.

I would not ditch the Dlink for the Orinoco UNLESS you plan on using an external antenna for wardriving or some other application. I have both and the Orinoco does not have better range. In fact without an antenna the Dlink picks up more AP's while driving around town, at least according to netstumbler.

What is the range on these cards? My univeristy has a tower that's pretty near by my dorm. Should i invest in one of these? Or do i need a 802.11a card for that? Please lemme know :) Thanks.

Yes I'm quite surprised there are so many wardrivers on this board :) but it is a fun as hell hobby. Also teh Dlink 650+ supports this enchanced 802.11b junk that allows for you to connect to two channels simultaniously and effectively get 22MBS speed. Also since it has this built in you can technically connect to more APs simulatniously (but the Orinoco maxes at 12, and honestly connecting to 12 APs at the same time! and you can only do simulatnious connections in linux anyway)

I used to have D-LINK DWL-650 (not plus model) before Dell 1150. Let me tell you, the difference in signal strength is astounding with 1150. I think for under $60.00 shipped it is best deal around bar none.

What is fun about war-driving? I am not trying to bash you but am honestly interested. To me it seems like something that would be interesting for about the first 5 minutes and then get old. Is there more to it than just the thrill of finding an open network/free Internet access?

I have the DWL-650+. I have no problems with it except for one. NO LINUX DRIVERS! These Orinocos are tempting...
