Why -R??

Everyone I know who already has a DVD burner has a +R.

And their burnt dvd's have worked in all the dvd players we've tried.

Is there any particular reason to go -r?
Is it a better format?

I am going +R because the majority of the people I know have that format.

None really. The DVD-R's are suppose to have a higher compatibility rate with other devices than DVD+R's. But the different is very slim. It's something like 93% vs. 89% I think.ojzlqwgu

-R just won't die. That's why virtually every new drive out is dual format burning compatible. I burn 90% DVD-R because the media is still generally cheaper and everything I have reads -R. I do agree that if someone is going for a single format burner to get a -R, like the Mad Dog Toshiba 4x burner for the same price at OM without rebates.

I still have 2 players that won't read +R discs and eventually I'll replace those.

I think if you've already discovered that "+R" DVD's work in the players that you want to be using, that therefore you'll be fine with that format. 'nuff said really.

Price is certainly good, so is the brand name. Maybe not deal of the century, but if you're looking for a burner, it's worth going for.

"XBox and PS2 work with - and + media."

I can't get +R to work in my XBox. This is what made me the way I am. :)

Media tested was Memorex 2x +R burnt with Memorex drive.

That won't work. Simply because the $50 rebate is instant bringing your out of pocket to $99.99. Now if you could find a coupon that was $20 off $100 or something similar then that would work.

Since the rebate is through HP it would make it a better deal to go to staples and PM 110% then submit the $30 MIR. Would save you additonal cash.

Talking to Manufacturers, +r will win out. They say that since Dell is behind +r it will win.

My XBOX reads DVD+R and DVD+RW without a problem, and it's an older model with Thompson drive. And I burn with a HP 300i.

+r seams to have the momentum behind it. It also seems to have more advantages than disadvantages. The only advantage I see with -R is that older players seem to do a little better with the disks. Most all new home players support +r really well.

Which format your XBOX will read depends on the drive. All of the newer XBOXes seem to be shipping with the Samsung drive, which wont read +R, unfortunately. If you have one of the older Thomson drives, then +R is fine for you (but the drive hates CDR's!). Can't win!

Same here. Most of the -R crowd is uninformed. +R has better compatability when the drive writes the media identifier as 'DVD-ROM' instead of 'DVD+R'. It's called bitsetting. Some drives don't support it. The HP 300i does. A bitset DVD+RW is supposed to be 100% reflectively identical to a commercially pressed DVD-Video disc according to the group that developed the +RW specification; it hasn't failed me yet.

It's not on Officemax's site. Is this in-store only? Do you have a sku number by chance?

Actually I can read CD-R and CD-RW as well. Though it is somewhat picky on the media.

The +R side already won. People need to read up a bit more. As for whether the deal is hot? No. The 300i is a discontinued model and HP was offering all sorts of rebates to unload them as far back as a month and a half. For the same ammt of money you can get a dual format with better specs, or wait until April and invest in a Dual Layer DVD burner that is scheduled to come out.
