Ok, so its winter here in Hong Kong.. themometer here says 17c in room. my opteron is @ 2.8ghz, with 1.5vcore. idle is at 38, and load when priming is 60 (SIXTY).

The cooler, my XP90 was carried over from my 3200 winchester, which i had run at stock since my RAM crapped out so, 1.45vcore, 2.0ghz. 28/40 were the idle/load temps..

Now, YES this chip is running faster with more voltage.. but.. should it be THAT hot (ive reseated heat sink once since the initial install, both times with ceramique and am getting the exact same temperatures.

Anyone know whats wrong? i think this is hot even for an opteron.

yeah and since they are 1mb chips, they will definitely run hotter than 512kb venices/winchesters.

Opterons are also validated for higher temperatures. I wouldn't worry much about it unless you plan on priming 24/7. A64s start leaking like mad once they hit around 2.6GHz, some leak more, some leak less but they all experience pretty big current draws.

my 146 @ 2.6 and 1.45V does 35c idle and 48c load. with a XP90 + 48CFM fan. It has to be your Vcore. that would be my first guess, your room temp is low enough. I don't totally agree with the statement about Opterons always running hotter than Venice's. I replace my 3200+ venice with this operton. And when they were both at 2.4ghz the opteron did it at stock voltage, where as the venice needed 1.45 to be stable. Therefore the Opteron had a lower temp cause of the lower vcore at same overclocked speed than the venice.

what does leaking mean?

I also have a 146 and w/ stock HSF runs 28-29c and 39-42c prime95 torture test. Just regular win and software running its ~ 35-38c.
I believe your xp90 is not working properly or not seated right.
try stock HSF and see if any better.
I usually lap the heatsink to mirror. If you know about lapping and already done it great, but here how its done.
You water sand starting from 200,400,600 and 800 grade waterproof sand paper. some do it as high as 1000-1200 grade paper, but I think 800 is good enough. the 800 grade after 10 minutes smooth to grade 1000 or better.
I use a small mirror to rap the sandpaper. some use glass, but a good mirror is better because glass could have some imperfection like a bad mirror that distorts your reflection.
some use metal polish for final rub. I am sure you use artic silver 5 too. But if the heatsink is made of copper and smooth out as above, I don?t use any thermal compound, because copper has a better heat conductivity than any thermal compound and defeats the purpose. also make sure that enough pressure is applied to create full molecular contact. But be careful not to crack anything.

Hmm i remember when i was testing my 148 out on stock cooler w/ stock settings it was like 36C idle and 44C load. Of course i used AS5 tho.

I'm getting 53-55c load on stock with NO AS5 bec. i didn't want to void warr.

yet I'm running@2.655Ghz

lol

Weird I know, but I remounted the block 3 or 4 times very carefully and even took the other two blocks out of the loop, but it still loads at 37C at stock voltage. My 3700+ loaded at 28C or so at the same voltage and an X850XT PE in the loop.
