I just wish it had a dvd burner.

Was considering a Turion instead of Sempron though, the power consumption and heat is much lower on Turion i think, maybe Turion battery life is better.

I wonder if the performance in 32bit is very different between Sempron 3300+ and Turion64 ML-34/37

Does anyone know if its possible to swap out this sempron chip and put a turion in the same socket?

Its about $150 to get a low power 25w 1.8ghz turion mt34, this notebook chassis looks pretty nice but a turion would make it a much better package

I have this laptop with the Turion and the 12 cell battery. It runs cool and quiet with the fan only reving up when loading a program or gaming. The cpu is not soddered on so it is swappable. The ATI 200M onboard graphics takes upto 128mb of system memory so an additional 256 to 512 of RAM is reccommended. The wifi has a good range also. These Compaq v2000 series are going on sale all over town for $399 and up. Look for front page flyer sales.

I have this one, and it's pretty cool and quiet.
The battery life however isn't too great, but still acceptable. I've gotten almost 2.5 hours out of the 6-cell with some tweaks.

I ended up getting one of these, Compaq 2710US, needed a small notebook with 14" screen.

Everything looks nice but the Altec Lansing speakers in the front seem to have a very low max volume. The volume is turned all the way up in Windows and all the way up with the hardware volume buttons on the notebook, but DVDs play with incredibly low volume, You can't hear the sound in quiet scenes if you're more than a foot or two from the notebook.

I looked at the Outpost reciept that came in the box and it says "v2710us Sempron 3300+ 512MB;80GB HHD,RECYCLEPLU" the "RECYCLEPLU" seems to be cut off at the end of the description field. This notebook is supposed to be new, non-refurb, the security seal tape was on the plastic bag that the notebook came in. What might "RECYCLEPLU" at the end of the description field mean?

I don't know if this is typical for 14" notebook speakers, to be very low in volume. Does anyone have one of these v2000z series Compaq notebooks with Altec Lansing speakers? Is your volume very low?

Does anyone know of software to increase the Windows volume beyond its normal maximum level?

A few answers:

The Mobile Semprons in these notebooks are 25 Watt. My Turion is a 35 Watt.

Speaker volume is low, so for playing DVDs in the minivan we run a line from the headphones out plug infront to an FM modulator that sends the movie sound through the vans speakers. We mostly set the balance to the rear so the kids can hear. If I am using it in a quite room the stock speakers are fine, if there is noise around I just use headphones.
