Surprised I haven't seen this posted yet, so here goes....

Office Max (OM) has the Memorex 100-pack 80-min 700MB CD-R spindle on sale for $9.99 after $20.00 instant rebate and $10.00 mail-in rebate. Out-the-door price after instant rebates, before mail-in rebates is $19.99 - so where's the deal????

More than half the spindles I've looked at, at several different OMs appear to be Taiyo Yudens (ie. labeled "Made in Japan"). While there is no screw-on cap that is typical in the 30-pack and 50-pack TY spindles, the label clearly states "Made in Japan". These spindles have a slightly more tapered appearance to the plastic spindle cover than does the spindle shown in the weekly flyer, and they do *not* have a noticeable "lip" where the spindle-cover locks into the spindle base. I have seen these spindles in both 32x and 40x rated speed.

While I have not purchased a spindle, Synergy3618 reports (below) that these disks are identified as Taiyo Yudens by CDR Identifier (ver 1.63). I have a sizeable stash of TYs, and large number of outstanding rebates, but....

.... may have to purchase some more since these are TYs....

The important stuff:
Memorex 100-pk 80-min CDR
SKU 2004-4293
UPC - unknown (sorry, forgot to write it down)
manufacturer - Taiyo Yuden (100% verified)

Price breakdown:
* $39.99 - register price
- $20.00 - instant rebate
* $19.99 - out-the-door cost
- $10.00 - mail-in rebate
* $ 9.99 - end-cost excluding tax

What may make this deal even hotter, is that the online rebate period is valid for 7/21 - 8/24/02 ! ! ! That's a mighty long window of "opportunity".... ;)

Added from below
Office Max has shown a trend recently, of running regional specials - that is running different "sales" in different regions - and then running the same "sale" at a different time, in another region(s). It appears that the Memorex deal (which was available here in their southeastern and northeastern regions through this past Saturday 7/27), is available in some of Office Max's other regions this week (western region for sure - not sure about their other regions). If the Memorex deal was not listed on the first page of your sales circular last week, it should be available starting this Sunday (7/28)...., or may be next Sunday...., or maybe....

With the rebate period being good through 08/24/02, it's possible this deal will be advertised on a rolling basis, at different times, in different areas over the next four weeks.... :cool:

Could this be some new "strategy" by Office Max to short-circuit online hot deals???? :Q

Nah...., I doubt there's anyone in their marketing division that's really that smart....

.... they're probably just looking at/for regional preference trends and/or are reducing regional inventories.

Chances are, you'll get Ritek or TY's. For the price, you can't really complain on what brand you get. =]

K-squared is correct, Memorex made in Japan CD-Rs are Taiyo Yuden discs, they are either 32X or 40X. I got a 100-pack spindle a few weeks ago from Best Buy. If the outside wrap covers the whole spindle, then it is TY discs. Beware that 40X Memorex made in Taiwan CD-Rs are made by CMC Magnetics, definitely avoid them.

According to the scans posted for the upcoming OfficeMax flyer of 7/28, the rebates are $20 instant and $10 mail-in. That makes the out the door price $19.99 instead of $29.99 and the deal is much hotter in my book as it's still a great price even if the rebate craps out. That is of course if the discs in your local OM are really Taiyo Yudens. If they're Riteks or CMC Magnetics they'd need to be at least $10 cheaper before I'd bite.

I noticed the 'new' Memorex's too the last time I was at Circuit City. Their screwtops were almost exactly the same as the Fuji's -- just a different color (blank instead of white I believe).

YES! You'll never find a TY disc with a "Made in Taiwan" label. Several companies, notably TDK and now Memorex, buy their blanks from different places, so one batch might be from the TY factory in Japan while another batch comes from one of the junk Taiwanese manufacturers like Ritek or CMC Magnetics. It's possible that one local store will have 100% made in Taiwan discs from Memorex while another store in the same chain will have all TYs from Japan and a third store will have some of each. Always check the labels, if it says Made in Japan buy it, if it says made in Taiwan pass and look in a different store.

The package says made in Japan, and CDRIdentifier 1.63 provides the following info:

ATIP: 97m 24s 01f
Disc Manufacturer: Taiyo Yuden Company Ltd.
Reflective layer: Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 73f / LBA: 359848)

In the US, Fujifilm, Memorex, and TDK CD-Rs have been reported as TY discs if they are made in Japan.

There is no way that Pengo discs are TY, they even mentioned that have a CD-R factory in Taiwan.

i got some free 650MB pengo discs with a cd wallet I purchased, they were made by Ritek. So if the package says made in japan, they are TY, if they are made in taiwan it is up for grabs -- Ritek (not bad) or any number of other taiwanese manufacturers (most are not so good).

39.99 at my Office Max. No budging on the price, so didn't pick any up.

Any evidence that this doesn't start next~ week?

Hi Folks,

This deal won't start until Sunday, July 28. Check out the first page of OfficeMax scanned flyer Here

K-squared, you may want to edit the title, so people don't get disappointed. Also, the picture in the flyer is the one made in Taiwan.

Office Max has shown a trend recently, of running regional specials - and running the same "sales" at different times, in the different regions. It appears that the Memorex deal is on here on their southeastern region through this Saturday, but not in Office Max's western region (I'm not sure about their other regions). If it's not listed on the first page of your sales circular this week, the Memorex deal should be available starting Sunday. With the rebate period being good through 08/24/02, it's possible this deal will be advertised at different times, in different areas over the next four weeks....

Hmmm,.... Hi-Val,.... 74-min,.... $30.00 BEFORE rebate,.... NOT !

i saw the deal on my circular this week, nyc. dont always get a circular in the paper...

anyway, a few years ago, i bought some memorex platinum discs that were TY. they were before spindles became the norm rather than the exception, ie, i got them in jewel cases.

ring it ALL THE WAY UP and see if THE TOTAL CHANGES...
good luck!

They had plenty of Made In Japan (TY), all with the older 24X or 32X label. All the ones in the newer packaging were Taiwan (CMC ... yuck)

Problem? $39.99+tax with a $10 MIR. I hate MIRs. No thanks. I'd rather spend the extra for Fuji. :)

K-squared, you are absolutely right, and thanks for the clarification. It's going to be confusing for some folks from now on.
