Don't forget to double check for an 8 in the sixth digit of the serial # if you would prefer to have the newer LDW-451S model. There has been discussion about it using a newer chipset that might be able to do 8x with a firmware update.

As for upgrading to 8x speed, I think that's all speculation at this point and there's no guarantee it's possible. However, it does seem that new firmware for both the LDW-451s and the LDW-851s has been posted on lite-ons website.

understand there is speculation..but if liteon does the same with the dvd drives as cdrw then one may get free speed by firmware changes..

liteon is notorious for just downgrading speed but using same drive components for the 32x-40x-48x-52x cdrw

the key issue is whether the 451S has same chipset and components as the 851S..no one seems to have tried to upgrade the 451S to 851S..they all seem to be trying to use the 411S fw....
