That link doesn't take me to the drive- I went and found the drive, it says its 149.95... or is that without the 15% off?

That is without the discount. Added it in cart and it should take off $22.

Search google for reviews :) The 75gxp and 60gxp series had problems, IBM even put a spec in the documentation for those models saying they had a maximum of 333 power on hours per month (11 hours a day). That specification doesn't appear in the 120gxp models however.

Personally I would think twice about doing this. I mean IBM is selling thier hard drive lines to someone else at the moment, was it hitachi? Plus, I got a 120 gig special edition 8 meg cache Western Digital hard drive for about $140 from dell not too long ago (some people got it for $125). So there are better drives out there for not too much more.

Anyway my 2 cents, I'm sure its a great drive if you want to give it a go.

The only IBM I have ever returned was because i dropped it ten seconds after i had it out of the static bag.

Thats not to say they are the best drives but frankly I have returned one of every drive brand I have owned. Is their failure rate higher?
probably.
Do they make solid drives?
most of the time.

Does WD and Maxtor make better drives?

Dunno I've returned em both.. on the other hand I have a 3.5 year old wd 8gig here and a 2.6 year old maxtor and a 1 year old IBM.. hehe it's really tough to gauge quality as long as they are working. I have built 6 systems in the last couple years for Family members and the majority of those are IBM with no failures yet.. but when talkiin about hard drives.. it's always YET because they do fail sometimes gloriously and sometimes painfully. hehe :D

I have owned four IBM's and they all died.

I have owned a Quantum and it works perfectly
3 WD's they work perfect, and
1 Maxtor that works perfect.

Unless IBM changed something since 60GXP I wouldn't really mess with it

I have owned 3 maxtors and 1 died.
I have owned 2 Western Digitals, 2 died.
I have owned 2 IBM drives, 60 GXP's, still ticking.

Hard drives break.

I have a certain view on hard drives and how to know what drives are good (other than personal experience). That is to ask a tech who deals with replacing hard drives alot. In my personal pc "career", I have a 2 gig ide16 seagate drive still going strong, a 2.6 gig maxtor that died but the rma'd drive (4 or so years old) still going, an 8.4 gig udma33 maxtor still going, had a 3.1 gig WD die on me, and now have a 40 gig maxtor 7200 going fine and a Samsung 80 gig 7200rpm going fine as well. I've only had 1 seagate and 1 WD and the WD died, but that's hardly conclusive. Anyhow... my friend is 32 and has been a tech for 10 years now. According to him... some of the hard drive manufacturers that used to be rock solid have let their quality control go downhill. He used to LOVE Western Digital, but anymore that's about all he's replacing. Also, he has replaced according to him 9 out of 10 seagate baracuda IV's that have been installed by him. He has 2 baracuda III's at home he uses that are going great... so he says he must have gotten lucky. Anyhow... according to him the maxtors are reliable and the samsungs are very reliable (that's why i didn't go with the IBM 80 gig for the same price of around $90). Anyhow... things change. I'm happy with Maxtor and Samsung still has yet to be proven to me at least. If my current Maxtor dies... i'll be pissed (especially the samsung since i have all my important things on there)... but such is life. Does that make the line of hard drives un-reliable? No... but if i get 3 more rma'd then ya.. i'd say so. Sorry for ranting.
