so pull off the side panel, get a slave girl to waft the box with a palm frond, and see if the temps are better... yeah, you may need better flow in the case... you didn't mention that you have sli'd 480's adding a little warmth to the inside of the case...

and the nb's run hot unless they have some giant hs (and you have good airflow in the case) on them...

and that p95 temp is nothing to worry about...

No SLI, just a single Radeon 4830

I think it's just a combination of a hot CPU and pretty weak fans. I tried a different cooler (CM V8) and got the same temps. Also the fans I used in the original push/pull HS were weak I think. they were the enermax "batwing" fans, forgot the model name but they spin at 900 rpm's. I'm keeping the CM V8 and will go online and orde me some Gentle Typhoons. Is there a big difference 1150 rpm and 1450 rpm models ? (noise / airflow)

How come no one asked him about the ambient temp in the room? I find that my CPU at idle temp is highly dependant on the room temp. When my room temps are at 72F my CPU is at 39C. When my room temps creep up in summer my CPU is about 43C. Plus the software that you use to measure the temp matters as well. I have seen a wide variety of readings depending on which software tool you use. RealTemp is the one everyone likes but ASUS Probe offers readings that are at least 8C lower. Who is to say which is right?

My i7 920 idles around 42-45C as well. Of course that is with 1.3V and running at 4.2Ghz .......... :whiste:

It's an Antec performance series case, airflow is OK but thats changing, I just ordered some gentle typhoons. My room temps are 70-72*. Going from an athlon x3 to this was a big jump in heat and noise, I have to say so far I'm a little disappointed

My i7 920 at stock (for stability) runs about 40-45 idle and around 70c full load when I render work/etc...

It's hot enough to heat up my room especially if I'm rendering a large project for 30~minutes at a time using all 4 cores.

Nothing to worry about to be honest.

Aside from the wrongs already pointed out by Markfw900, it should bear noting that "hexacore" means six (6) cores, not eight (8). So even if your excuse were valid (but it isn't), you would still have been wrong in claiming the i7 920 is a hexacore.

As to why nobody responded, it eludes me as well.

I did run a prime 95 test late last night (only for about 5 mins though) and the CPU got up to 56c max after 5 mins

If the difference between idle and max load is only 11c, that makes me think the fan profile is the factor. Perhaps the fan profile is set such that it that makes the fan spin as slow as possible while temps are below 50C (no load / minimal load), but then ramps up to max as the temps exceed 50C, which causes temps to top out at 56C. In my gigabyte board, something like this was easy to setup and tweak, don't know if something like that is applicable to you.

Since you have obviously put some time into your HSF and its mount, I'm going to chock this up to case airflow.

Perhaps not enough positive or negative pressure or a simple lack of fresh air. You'd be surprised how much of a difference it can make. I have found having a good deal more intake vs outtake gives better temps.

For instance in my case I have five intake fans and 1 outtake and temps are good.

thanks for the info. I'm hoping the gentle typhoons will help. I have 0 for intake now but I ordered 3 fans so I can use 1 for intake in the front.
