hp deskjet 6122 from staples.com

$199.98
- $20.00 (instant savings)
- $30.00 ($30 off $150 coupon code found using google)
- $40.00 (hp's "color IT now" promotion rebate )
- $40.00 (staples gift check with purchase of hp 6122)
------------
$69.98

just bought mine at staples for $149.98 and now waiting to send in hp's $40 rebate and staples $40 gift check.

the only problem for me is that the gift check can only be used in staples stores, which are nowhere near me so i'll figure out a way to trade it.

I got one of these a while ago and received the gift check already. HP asked me for confirmation of the serial number of my printer. I had to go into the printer toolbox to print some sort of diagnostic page that included the serial number and fax it to them.

One good characteristic of this printer is that it has automatic duplex capability, allowing you to easily print on both sides of one sheet of paper. However, this slows down printing considerably because it has to wait for the ink to dry on the first side before it flips the paper around to print on the other side. Automatic duplexing works much more efficiently on laser printers.

The 6122 is a much nicer printer, as it normally retails for $199, and the 5550 sells for only $129. The 6122 uses the older style HP cartridges (the 45 and the 78), which hold much more in then the newer 56 and 57 cartridges for about the same price. Each printer prints about the same quality pictures, unless you use the optional photo cartridge on the 5550.

This is a nice printer. Especially nice if you get it for the "after rebate price". I did a lot of homework on printers under $200. Check the reviews on the Canon i850. End of the year review here:Tom's hardware , indicated that for an all around printer (photo quality, speed, and text) the Canoni850 was hard to beat. It is fast, does not use a lot of ink and prints very well. However, there is still room for improvement on four points:
The way the ink soaks into draft paper. The colors show through so much it makes printing on both sides of the paper a problem;
When will Canon equip its printers with a detector of paper type? Once you have experienced the highly effective one on an HP printer, you find it hard to do without;
The price. It would be nice to have the same droplet size on a more affordable machine, even at the cost of a lower speed;
The photo paper. Canon paper is quite time-resistant, but only if you protect it under glass. Otherwise the colors fade quickly. HP matte photo paper needs no such protection, and that is much more convenient! I have both HP & Canon printers. I like both. The Canon is faster, & it's ink is cheaper ($10-$12 bucks a cartridge (x4)) . By the way, with online coupons found through a Google search, or checking your "chubby wallet"; you can easily get this printer for$139.99 or less. Just my 2cents. LOL

You couldn't give me an HP printer. After 4 cartridges you've paid them the $150 you saved...

Mac

PS. The i850 blows it away and yes it doesn't use as much ink as my Canon S750 either. Must be something to do with the smaller droplet size.

I'm still thinking whether or not I should get this printer. I'm also thinking about getting the new i950.
But the initial price of the printer is what I'm thinking about, especially since I can now pricematch the 6122 to Compusa which selling it for 149.97.

Compusa $149 VS. Staples at $199 minus $20 instant = $179 minus $40 gift card = Staples at $139.

I don't think they will price match it at $179

The Canon i850 can be bought usually , now, for $169.99 with no rebates.Maybe get a gift card or look for additional rebates to bring it down to about $139.99. Check fry's or Best Buy. When I was shopping the big 3 didn't carry it(OD, OM, Staples). Xlnt text & photo printer for $$.Fast & economical. The i950 is newer, but $100 more=$249. Good luck, & maybe read some reviews on your choice.:)
