Is that 250w power supply large enough?
I have seen 2 different PCI video cards that stated the requirement that the power supply have 300 watts or more.
Don't know if they actually need that much, or if it is overkill by the card manufacturer.

Do you really think those Dell engineers are going to give you an inadequete power supply that will lead to RMAs and turnaround time as soon as you drop in a new video card or hard drive?
You are not smarter than them.

I think that's exactly what I was pointing out - moreover even if the dell enineers were to let it happen - the manufacturer of the P/S would not want to deal with that kind of fiasco...

So anyways I gave in to this. Did anyone else? $700 shipped including tax with the Geforce FX5200, 1 GB RAM, 80 GB HD and 3 GHz P4 w/ HT. Took just the basic keyboard/mouse/CDROM and WinXP Home, I will put in my CDRW and DVD+-RW when I get it.

The effectiveness of power supplies is based upon the number of amps supplies to both the 3.3, 5, and 12V rails.
As far as I know, hard drives/optical drives use the 12V rail. I think most AGP cards are now using 3.3V or lower. PCI mainly draws on 3.3V now, and not 5v. So if a power supply that is 300+ watts had low 3.3 and 12V currents, and a lot to the 5V rail which to my knowledge is hardly used anymore, it's essentially an inflated number that you will never use.

Make sure you follow the instructions EXACTLY as said in the original post ...
1. http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/compare.aspx/dimen?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd
to go to Dell Dimension page.
2. Click on Featured Systems under Dimension 8300. ( Not Customize It )
3. Find the $649 bundle and click on Customize It
4. Under Memory - Select 4X your memory for FREE
5. Under Hard Drive - Select FREE UPGRADE! 80GB Ultra
6. Hit Continue, Continue, Add to Cart.
Especially make sure you are first clicking on FEATURED SYSTEMS and then clicking on CUSTOMIZE IT.
I *just* followed these steps again and still can get it for $649
For my own order, I did add the floppy and Remote control for Dell Media Experience, so my total came to $689 before taxes and about $715 with tax and free shipping.
BTW, does anyone know which remote control Dell ships as the "Dell Media Experience" remote ?
