just a couple things to add...
A) your links are nonexistant...but here is the TDK, here is the coupon, here is the veloCD rebate, as well as a rebate on the 50 pk....not sure about the plex.
B) i ordered the TDK 2 days ago...1/21...called today to see how the backorder is doing, the CSR told me that looks like as much of a two week backup, b/c the warehouses can't keep up with the sales they're makin on the writer/media combo

maxcom,

The Burn-Proof technology is the one licensed from Sanyo...it's the same as the Plextor I believe.

As gittyup said, this has been discussed before, but let me quickly add a couple of comments in case this is new to you. First, the TDK veloCD 12x is a rebadged plextor 12x. Second, and more importantly, buy.com may not be a "participating retailer" (which is a condition for the rebate) as far as TDK is concerned, so you may not get your $50 back if you buy from there. See the other threads for more info.

[Edit: Several people have posted that they have contacted TDK and confirmed that buy.com is a participating retailer. Now if only they will have it in stock :)]

Warning

I just called TDK customer service this morning and they stated that buy.com was not participating on the current deal. This is why a rebate icon is not shown on the description page. I have already received mine and done some burning so I have no recourse. But if you are buying this drive make sure the rebate is valid. It hurts losing the $50......

I bought the TDK from another store and they ended up sending me two because they never marked the original shipment as sent from the wharehouse(a UPS problem). So I called and complained about my drive showing that it hadn't left the wharehouse, and the guy gave me free next day shiipping and when I got to my house there was already a drive there. So 2 drives for $100 after rebates and probably turn a profit after I sell the extra. I already called the bank I was only charged once. Sweet deal.

rondeemc...who did you talk to? I called the number on the rebate page right when they opened, 9 am, and asked if buy was a participating retailer they said yes.

bigdoggy, here is a quick lesson. To make a hyper link you would do like this. [ L=Here]http://www.anandtech.com[/L ] where the word "Here" will be what you see, and it will link to Anand. Do NOT leave the spaces I left between the words and the brackets.

TuOni - The TDK is a rebadged Plextor. They both have burnproof, as does the Iomega 12x10x32, and the Creative Labs....

THERE IS CURRENTLY NO PLEXTOR REBATE

I called TDK last week when I bought mine from Buy.com (not in stock), and they said Buy.com is participating in the program and they would accept my purchase. Better not be lying to me.

Well this is interesting FriedRiceBob. I talked to "Diana" in customer service around 9:10am today. She put me on hold and then came back with the bad news. I asked her how an individual is supposed to know who is "participating" and she said well were they advertising the rebate. I came back with the logic that just because they don't advertise the rebate doesn't me they aren't participating. ONly if they said "no rebates" would that be a factor. I then asked do they have a list posted at there website and of course they don't so she started to dance. I think I will call back tomorrow and see if I can get another answer that I like better.

I posted this in one of the other VeloCD theads too. I got this e-mail from TDK today:
------------------------------------------------------
Dear Valued TDK Consumer:

Thank you for taking the time to correspond with us.
We are sorry but Buy.com is not a participating dealer.

Thank You
Customer Services Department
TDK Electronics Corporation.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

So... TDK is giving out conflicting information. I wonder if it is significant whether you use the rebate form that uses the phrase "participation retailers" versus the form that doesn't use this phrase.

I don't know why you guys are all hussied up about "burnproof".....big whoop..so you won't toast a disk...not like they cost a fortune these days. If you wanna do some serious burning, look at a drive that can read sub-codes and/or "cloneCD".....

The rebate here says nothing about participating retailers. It may be doctored though. Don't know for sure.

Um...seeing as plextors can read sub code, plextors can cloneCD, and you get the benifits of being able to actually use your computer while you burn, do anything you want, and never burn a bad cd, and this drive is physically identical where it matters to the plextor, and you can get it for 150, I'd say there might...just might be a reason to get "all hussied up" about this deal.
