my gf wants a new notebook harddrive. She has two requirements:

Over 120GB

Must be very quiet.

Does this fit the bill?

I've been thinking about upgrading the 5400rpm 160gb drive in my Dell laptop. Generally speaking, do 7200rpm drives eat up significantly more power?

Not really...

Yes, this is the latest and greatest LAPTOP drive - 4th generation Hitachi Travelstar - big, fast, quiet, low power consumption, yada, yada, yada...

I was tossed up between this and a Western Digital Scorpio Black, which is WD's latest and greatest.

Hit won the toss! I was just waiting for a sale... 😀

Drive noise is relative to which lappy you're running. I've noticed that when someone complains about noisy HD in reviews - almost 100% of the time it's an Apple user! How about you - ever notice that yourself?

Sound has everything to do with the 'sound qualities' of the case, and hardly anything to do with the drive itself, IMHO.

Put another way, I think certain thin, lightweight, plasticy (if that's a word) lappys tend to amplify HD noise - other 'heavier' ones don't!

Talking about Docking Stations (ahem)... You can put the same 'noisy' HD into a dock/external enclosure and it will be perfectly quiet! So, it ALL depends on YOUR machine!

Anyway, to wrap this up...

Hitachi 7K320 vs WD Scorpio Black 320G 7K - which to choose?

Hit & WD are both big, fast, quiet, and relatively cheap - so it becomes a personal matter, and...

Personally, I'll always choose a Western Digital drive when it absolutely, positively, has to fail - but prefer Toshy & Hit drives when they absolutely, positively, have to succeed - like in a airport concourse, conference hall, or hotel room, 3000 miles away from home - but that's just me!

Your choice! How much do you like your GF??? 😉

Other 7200s... Yes! This one... No!

The Hit 7K320 is best-of-breed on power consumption! Dittos for shock resistance...

The 7K320 sips a mere 1.8 watts on read/write and 0.8 watt at idle - placing it on par with most 5400rpm models...

Yep! That's what they say over in the ThinkPad Forums: Text

And, thanks! I edited the original post to reflect the new pricing... 😉

Heh! Well, I'll tell you what... This is a tough little critter! 😀

I got home tonight, and the box from Newegg was sitting on the kitchen table. ~Cool

I opened up the packaging and promptly dropped the bare drive on the floor. I dropped it on the counter before installing it - and I dropped it on the floor a second time when I turned my lappy over without having the access door screwed down tight - slippery little suckers, these 2.5" drives!

LoL! It survived all that, and my OpenSUSE install, and here I am... so far, so good!

As soon as I get my docking station, I think I'll drop it a few times too... 😉

In terms of speed and power consumption, is this drive much better than the Hitachi 7200 RPM, 160GB 7K160 (HTS722016k9SA00) in my Thinkpad right now, or is it just a slight evolutionary improvement?

Well... It's kinda hard to cut through all the hype, but Hitachi isn't known for sitting on their laurels, sooo...

Every time Hit comes up with a new Travelstar it's evolutionary, IMHO!

The 7K320 obviously consumes half the power of the 7K160 (according to specs/reviews). Some ppl have bragged about the 7K320 giving them an extra 30 minutes of battery time over other 7200rpm drives - but I doubt it... 😉

I'm playing around with Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop x64 right now (which is known to be brutal on HDs), while I'm waiting for the Dock Station to arrive...

Since I can't do an A-B comparison yet, all I can tell you is this 7K320, sitting in my Toshy A215, is dead quiet and the affected palm rest doesn't *feel* any warmer than with the 5400rpm drive it replaced!

LoL! I can't believe this thing survived 3 drops - twice to a tile floor - before I even got it installed in this machine - and it's still ticking!

That in itself says something, no? 😀

Just an update:

The Thermaltake BlacX Docking Station worked great! This thing is sick!!!

I used Clonezilla to D2D the drives, and...

I've got 249GB of free space on my Vista HP lappy now, and the 'Disk data transfer rate' subscore went from 4.7 to 5.8 - really livened up this machine!

Now for the rebates (ugh!)...

w00t!!!

Price decrease!!! (I paid $77.99 after MIR)

And, I love this drive sooo much - I don't even care! 😀

Don't forget to add the 2.7% (before MIR) MS Cash Back - I know it is not much more but $2.67 off this deal makes it even more HOT.

Wow, I'm tempted to get this for the MSI Wind I haven't even gotten in the mail yet 😛

Good god, this is a good deal. I wonder if I should get this for the extra speed over the 160 gb drive...
