HOT! Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 64mb $29 FREE Shipping with ups

I'm looking for a cheap Video Card around this price. However I've never heard of this one before. Is it any good?

It's worth more as buying a piece of history than buying it for real use. The card is almost 3 years old and has a DX6 class chip (no fancy fixed function vertex shaders or hardware T&L). The speed isn't that great, much slower than a GF2 GTS and in many cases even slower than an original GF2 MX. The card had many driver problems with rendering glitches and games are fixed on a one-by-one basis in the drivers. IOW, if you buy it, expect problems in new games that may eventually get fixed.

AT's benchmarks shows much better performance than the other 2 links above. I forgot that FSAA performance was one of the highlights of the Kyro II.

Lol the Hercules Prophet.. I remember this card when it was THE thing. 🙂

HAH, it was a great card for it's time. Very underated though, I remember when my friend and I got it and it smoked everything out at the time. 😀

If you want a good, cheap card, check out this ASUS 8200 64Meg GF3 for $30 at MatrixSurplus.

The GF3 is a DX8 card, meaning it has both Vertex Shader and Pixel Shader 1.1 support.

It means that is a joke. Don't buy the card. It doesn't support DirectX. But to answer your question...

http://www.geocities.com/game_ops/features/graphics.html:
"This has happened ever since the launch of the PC's first 3D card - the Diamond Edge 3D in 1995 when Sega converted a handful of impressive Saturn games such as Virtua Fighter and Panzer Dragoon specifically to run on the card."

I think I have a couple of old Sega games that might be compatible with the NV1.

Man, I REALLY wanted one of these, but passed on it. Shoot, I still am running my Geforce 2 GTS. We talk about this card like it's the Good Ole Days. What was it, 2 years ago at most? 😛

Just for grins I looked up a review on this card, the Asus 8200. The review was done Sept 2001 when the card was $500 !!!!

On 3dMark2001 the card got 5300, it was good for 85 fps on Quake3 Arena (1280x1024, No FSAA), and it did overclock a wee bit.

The reviewer concluded that it was twice as fast as a Geforce2. Seems like a good buy for $30.... who needs more than 85 fps on Quake 3? Great card to put in grandma's computer for when you have to game over at her house for the weekend (heh heh).

In our tests, the Prophet 4500 compared favourably with some of the faster GeForce 2-based cards on the market, although it can't compete with the stunning performance of the GeForce 3 chip.

That was $500 Turkish dollars (notice the link to the "local distributor": cizgi.com.tr). The MSRP was "only" US$359 for the V8200 when it was released (not the Pure/Deluxe/Ti variants... just the original). 😛

Way overpriced, but around the same time as the review you listed, the GF3 Ti500 (MSRP $329, $290 retail street) had just come out cheaper than the original GF3 (MSRP $500 in January, revised down to $399 at launch in February!). Money didn't buy much video card back in 9/2001: the Radeon 7500 MSRP was $199 ($160 OEM street) and Radeon 8500 MSRP was $299 ($250 OEM street).

$500 Turkish dollars ?!!! Ooops, my bad.
Yeah, I wish the Geforce 3-500 TI was readily available as a bulk purchase.
That would definately be a card worth buying for $30.

Thanks for the surplus link. I like computer surplus stores. I noticed that the card you linked to was a "referb" but then I saw your post in the other Kyro link.

"About a month ago I picked up the Asus v7700 geforce2 GTS from a tip in these forums. It was listed as a "referb" at Matrix Surplus, but other than being in a brown box with no accessories, appeared new and has run flawlessly.

I paid $28 shipped for the card, and would definately recommend it over the Kyro II since it's faster and doesn't have the potential incompatabilites.

Here's the link Matrix Surplus AGP video cards "

Actually, I have (had) this card until a couple weeks ago when a PSU went and took the mobo and video with it. My lowest end system...I got the card when it was fairly new, about the time that Half Life came out. It was a great card at the time...not top of the line, but held it's own for well under $100. Not worth it now IMO. There are no driver updates, havent been for over a year.
